NCAA Bracketology: Predicting 2019 March Madness Field

South Region – Louisville, Kentucky

1-Kentucky Wildcats – Kentucky battles LSU on Tuesday, Feb. 12. If the Wildcats beat the Tigers and cover, that would make it 9 straight SU and ATS. Eventually, UK overtakes Tennessee and grabs the 1-seed from the SEC.

2-Michigan Wolverines – Michigan could win the Big Ten, which they should, and still miss out on getting a 1-seed. The Wolverines are the best team in the Big Ten. That doesn’t make them a 1, though.

3-Villanova Wildcats – Nova lost by only 1 to Marquette on the road over the weekend. The Wildcats are surging. If they win the Big East tournament, they could end up as a 2. In any case, they should win enough to attract nothing less than a 3.

4-North Carolina Tar HeelsUNC will show up well enough to grab a 4. They could be vulnerable in Round 1. So, don’t jump on the Tar Heels to move past Round 2, the Sweet 16 at the most.

Midwest Region – Kansas City, Missouri

1-Virginia Cavaliers – Virginia will just to try to prevent another UMBC disaster like last season. The Cavaliers are the only 1-seed to fall to a 16-seed.

They should have an easier time this season in Round 1 and are clearly the best team in the ACC after Duke.

2-Marquette Golden EaglesMarquette’s been ultra-impressive, but they won’t win the Big East tournament. That will make the Selection Committee’s decision easier because Marquette, Tennessee, and Gonzaga are all in line for the 1-seed in the West.

3-LSU TigersTremont Waters will continue to excel as LSU’s point-guard while the Tigers will continue to impress. A deep SEC Tournament run, maybe even with an upset over Tennessee, should lock down a 3 for the Baton Rouge Tigers.

4-Purdue Boilermakers – The Big Ten’s loaded with good, but not great teams. Purdue is one of those good, but not great teams. The Boilermakers will impress enough the rest of this regular season to get at least a 4.

East Region – Washington, D.C.

1 – Duke Blue DevilsThe best team in the nation is surging at the right time. Duke dominated UVA by 10 points as a slight road dog this past Saturday. The Blue Devils shouldn’t lose another game from here until Selection Sunday. They’ll enter the NCAA Tournament the top team in the nation.

2 – Nevada Wolf PackNevada wins a lot of games. Like Duke, they shouldn’t lose again until the NCAA Tournament. The guess here is that the Selection Committee forgets all about the Wolf Pack’s unreal close to 30 point loss to the University of New Mexico and instead remembers all the wins over subpar opponents.

3 – Michigan State Spartans – MSU hasn’t played as well as it can in the past month. The Spartans should play well enough in the Big Ten Tournament to garner a 3-seed. Plus, the Selection Committee loves Sparty coach Tom Izzo.

4 – Houston Cougars – Houston’s ranked and plays in an up and coming conference, the American Athletic. That’s not good enough for more than a 4-seed, but it’s still pretty good.

West Region – Anaheim, California

1 – Gonzaga BulldogsThe Zags play in one of the worst NCAA Division 1 conferences in college hoops, the West Coast. Beating up teams like San Francisco and Pacific won’t impress the Selection Committee.

The Zags have done some things that will impress the Selection Committee, though. They beat Duke early in the season and only lost by 3 to Tennessee on a neutral court.

2 – Tennessee Volunteers – The Volunteers, so far, have been as good as the Blue Devils. However, Kentucky is surging and the prediction is that Tennessee doesn’t win the SEC Tournament, dropping from a 1 to a 2.

3 – Kansas JayhawksIt might be a down year for the usually deep Big 12. Kansas has been okay this season. They’ll win the Big 12 Tournament. It just won’t be enough to sway the Selection Committee away from giving them a 3.

4 – Wisconsin Badgers – Wisconsin could definitely move up from a 4 to a 3 to even a 2 depending on how well they play from now until Selection Sunday. The Badgers defense has really improved. They’re dominating and keeping teams from shooting a high percentage both from the field and from behind the three-point line. Wisconsin could win the Big Ten Tournament. That would send them higher than a 4.
