Key Numbers for the 2019 March Madness Tournament

Virginia will cover in every game until, possibly, the Final Four

Virginia has covered in 75% of their games this season. More impressive? They’re 10-1 against the spread in away games. That means the Cavaliers are used to playing on the road. Since every game in the NCAA Tournament is an away game, they should excel.

Michigan State will bow out early

The Spartans made it all the way to the Final Four in 2015. Since then, though, they’ve bombed big time. They bowed out in round 1 in 2016. They only lasted to round 2 in both 2017 and 2018. They were a 2-seed in 2016, a 9-seed in 2017, and a 3-seed last year. That makes Sparty a terrible team to back to win it all.

Gonzaga will make the Final Four

The Zags figure to march into the NCAA Tournament the overall 1-seed. They should get a great draw that will lead to another Final Four berth for Mark Few. The main reason? While teams like North Carolina, Duke, Kansas, and Kentucky had to battle in tough conferences, the Zags pretty much got to play high school teams in the West Coast Conference. Gonzaga should be well rested and ready to roll.

The Zags are also 20-11 ATS, a 64.5% win percentage. So, depending on the opponent, they’re a decent wager to cover.

Kansas won’t win a game against the spread

The Jayhawks are a solid team, but they’ve been overplayed, and overvalued by oddsmakers, all season long. The Jayhawks are only 13-16 against the spread. That’s a 44.8% success rate. That alone doesn’t give us much confidence, right?

What gives us less confidence? How about Kansas going 2-8 ATS on the road? The Jayhawks should fail miserably against the spread in the NCAA Tournament.

The Houston Cougars will provide a deep NCAA Tournament run

As a -7 home favorite on March 2, the Houston Cougars were supposed to easily beat the UCF Golden Knights. Not only did the Cougars not cover, they lost straight up. Houston’s better than that.

More importantly, a key statistic points to a deep NCAA Tournament run. Houston is a terrific 8-2 against the spread in away games. That’s an awesome 80% against the spread on the road. The Cougars will battle teams unfamiliar with coach Kelvin Sampson’s style of play. Expect a deep, awesome, money making run in the Big Dance.
