2019 March Madness Upset Betting Predictions & Picks
Season Series
Only scheduled meeting. Last season, they also met just once and Iowa lost at Maryland 91-73. Bruno Fernando scored 21 points, Anthony Cowan Jr. added 15 and Maryland pulled away. The Terps and Hawkeyes were locked in a tight game when Iowa coach Fran McCaffery was ejected 45 seconds before halftime for vehemently arguing a traveling call on Jordan Bohannon.
After Bohannon hit a 3-pointer to put Iowa up 64-61, a dunk by the 6-foot-Fernando sparked a 19-2 run that put the Terrapins ahead for good. Cowan contributed seven points to the spree and backcourt mate Darryl Morsell made three baskets. Isaiah Moss led Iowa with 25 points and Bohannon had 17.
Why Bet on Maryland?
The Terps were beaten on Saturday at then-No. 6 Michigan, 65-52. The Wolverines raced out to a 14-2 advantage and led by as much as 15 in the first half. It was a struggle for Michigan after that, but that big deficit was too much for Maryland to overcome. Michigan led 27-18 at halftime. Maryland Terrapins turned the ball over 13 times in the first half. The Terrapins had only three turnovers in the second, but the damage was done. Michigan had only six turnovers in the game and none in the second half.
Freshman Aaron Wiggins led all scorers with 15 points, knocking down three 3-pointers, while Bruno Fernando finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Fernando’s streak of double-doubles, tied for the third-longest in program history, was snapped at seven games. The Terps entered the game with a 5-1 record in Big Ten action when trailing at halftime, but could not overcome its halftime deficit this time.
The Terps remain one of the best rebounding teams in the nation, ranking second in the country and first in the Big Ten in rebound margin (+10.0). Fernando ranks second in the conference in rebounds/g (10.7), while Jalen Smith is fifth in offensive rebounds/g (2.75).
Fernando was named one of 10 players to the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award list (top center), becoming the first Terp to earn the honor in since its inception in 2015. Also on the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Midseason List, Fernando currently leads the Big Ten Conference (6th nationally) in field goal percentage (.668), ranks second in rebounds/g (10.7) and is third in blocks/g (1.9).

Why Bet on Iowa?
Iowa won its fourth in a row Saturday, 71-69 at Rutgers. Joe Wieskamp banked in a 3-pointer from the corner with less than a second to play. The Scarlet Knights appeared on the verge of their second upset of a ranked team this season when Geo Baker got a friendly roll on a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 3.3 seconds to play to put Rutgers ahead 69-68. After Iowa called a time out, Connor McCaffery threw a length of the court pass that Rutgers’ Eugene Omoruyi and Iowa deflected. The ball went to Wieskamp in the corner next to the Hawkeyes’ bench and his off-balance shot went in.
The final flurry ended a back-and-forth game that featured eight times and 15 lead changes. The 3-pointer was Wieskamp’s first of the game; he finished with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting.
Junior Jordan Bohannon paced Iowa with 18 points and five assists, making 5-of-11 field goals and three 3-pointers. Junior Isaiah Moss scored 17 — 12 in the first half — and junior Tyler Cook had 12 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Luka Garza tied for the team lead with seven boards.
The Hawkeyes shot 46.3 percent from the field with eight 3-pointers, while Rutgers finished at 45.6 percent with seven 3-pointers. Rutgers edged Iowa on the boards, 34-33, including 14 offensive rebounds and forced 15 Iowa turnovers. Bohannon made three 3-pointers to move into sole possession of second place on Iowa’s all-time 3-pointers made list. Bohannon scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half. Iowa improved to 6-1 in games decided by five points or less.
Iowa has two of the top three accurate 3-point shooters in the Big Ten. Wieskamp is second (.453), followed by Moss (.452). The Hawkeyes have already more than doubled their conference win total from a year ago with six league contests remaining. Iowa won four games in 2018 and is now 9-5 in the Big Ten.
