Why Bet on Miami?

The Canes (20-8) have followed a three-game losing streak with back-to-back wins. It was 79-78 over Boston College on Saturday. Freshman Lonnie Walker IV’s 3-point field goal with 2.4 seconds remaining was the winner. Walker’s 3-pointer capped a 26-11 run in the game’s final six minutes. The shot also gave Miami its first lead in over 17 minutes of play during the second half. With the win, Miami collected its 20th win on the year. The Hurricanes have now won 20 games in six of the last seven seasons under head coach Jim Larrañaga. The win also snapped Miami’s two-game home losing streak.  Miami held a commanding 39-27 advantage on the glass and posted a 27-3 advantage in bench scoring. With under two minutes to go in the game, Miami trailed by nine (73-64) and appeared to be facing a third straight loss at home. Larrañaga is the only coach in program history with six 20-win seasons. Miami had six 20-win seasons from 1985 (the program’s relaunch) to 1981. The Canes are now 4-0 in one-possession games in 2017-18. Star sophomore guard Bruce Brown has been out for a while following foot surgery. He’s not playing here and won’t play in the ACC tournament, either. Brown’s availability for the start of the NCAA tournament on March 13 is unlikely. He underwent surgery on Feb. 1, and at the time was expected to be sidelined for about six weeks. He’s averaging 11.4 points and shooting 42 percent, including 27 percent from 3-point range.

Why Bet on North Carolina?

The Heels (22-7) might be peaking at the right time on a six-game winning streak. They won at Syracuse last Wednesday, 78-74, so will be well-rested. Theo Pinson scored a career-high 23 points, and Joel Berry added 18, including the tiebreaking layup with 1:36 left.  Syracuse had trailed almost the entire game until a late eight-point run knotted the score, Carolina made some inexplicable decisions in the final five minutes and took some very dubious shots. The Tar Heels used the shot fake at all five positions to get Cuse defenders out of position, then found the open man. Carolina finished with a whopping 25 assists on 29 field goals. Are the Tar Heels a safe bet in the NCAA Basketball odds? Junior Luke Maye is averaging 18.0 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, is a candidate for the Naismith and Wooden Awards for National Player of the Year, the Karl Malone Award as the top power forward in the country, and All-ACC and Player of the Year honors. Maye is one of two players in the ACC in the top 10 in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage. Last season, he won Most Outstanding Player honors in the NCAA South Regional. The Tar Heels are ranked in the AP poll for the 894th week and the 668th week in the top 10. The Tar Heels will finish with a winning record in ACC regular-season play for the 58th time in 65 seasons (the 13th time in 15 seasons under head coach Roy Williams). This is the 42nd time in 65 seasons the Tar Heels have won at least 10 ACC regular-season games. Carolina’s KenPom offensive efficiency of 121.6 is its second highest in the last eight years, trailing only 2015-16 (124.1).
