Pacific vs Gonzaga Last Meeting

This is their only scheduled meeting in 2019-20. Last year, the Zags easily won both. It was 67-36 in Spokane. Yes, Pacific had just 36 points. Gonzaga ran right over Pacific with a 24-5 run to close out the first half. The Tigers used a slow-down offense most of the game against the high-flying Bulldogs.

Pacific had 14 turnovers in the 1st half which is almost as many points as they had (15). Pacific was held to its lowest point total of the season after shooting just 26.7 percent and committing 22 turnovers. Zags coach Mark Few is 14-0 all-time vs. Pacific.

Why Bet on Pacific?

In last Saturday’s loss at Santa Clara, Jahlil Tripp became the 29th Tiger in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark. Overall, he poured in a team-high 28 points, his second-highest point total on the season, while also adding six rebounds and three assists. Jeremiah Bailey also enjoyed a career night as the forward finished with a season-high 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Pacific led the Broncos in points off turnovers (13-10), second chance points (16-4), bench points (35-21) and points in the paint (38-36).

Tripp is guiding Pacific to their most successful season in the Damon Stoudamire era. In his third year with the Tigers, he continues to put together an all-conference season, currently leading Pacific in points per game (14.8), rebounds (8.5), steals (1.5) and minutes played (30.1). Additionally, he leads the WCC in rebounding while also placing fifth in the conference in steals and ninth in scoring.

Some Facts

Tripp is the only player on the Pacific roster averaging double figure points this season. But Pacific is a deep team as no less than 12 players are averaging at least 14.4 minutes per game. Freshman Pierre Cockrell II leads the Tigers in assists at 3.9, in just over 18 minutes of playing time, and James Hampshire, a 7-foot-1 transfer from Casper College, has registered close to two blocks per game. He was 14th in the nation in that category among community college players a year ago.

Pacific continues to be a threat from behind-the-arc this season as Justin Moore ranks second in the conference in three-point percentage (48.5%) while graduate transfer Gary Chivichyan is sixth in the WCC in three-point field goals made per game with an average of 2.1. Pacific has been solid defensively this season allowing opponents to score 63.8 points per game to rank 60th in scoring defense in the NCAA.

Why Bet on Gonzaga?

The Zags (20-1) won their 12th in a row last Saturday, 92-69 over BYU. Gonzaga shot 74% (17 for 23) from the field after halftime. They stretched their home win streak to 34 in a row, tops in the county, and also became the first school to 20 wins this season. Gonzaga closed out its sixth consecutive win against BYU without leading scorer Filip Petrusev, who went down hard early in the second half and was helped off the floor.

Not clear as of now if Petrusev will play here with a high-ankle sprain. Doesn’t seem likely. Petrusev, who averages 16.7 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, is a 6-foot-11 sophomore forward from Serbia. In addition, freshman Anton Watson recently had season-ending shoulder surgery. Watson averaged nearly five points and three rebounds in about 15 minutes per game. When Watson was ruled out, Coach Mark Few opted not to replace him. Gonzaga’s eight-man rotation shrunk to seven. Now it might be six.

More Numbers

Killian Tillie had 22 points and 10 rebounds vs. BYU, Corey Kispert scored 19 points, and Joel Ayayi and Admon Gilder had 14 apiece. Gonzaga has won 33 straight regular-season West Coast Conference games, breaking a league record that it shared with the Pepperdine teams of 1991-93.

Kispert was named WCC Player of the Week on Monday. Kispert leads Gonzaga with 53 3-pointers and ranks second in scoring at 14.4 points. He’s scored in double figures in 11 of the last 12 games. Kispert is the third Zag to be named player of the week, joining Ryan Woolridge and Petrusev.

Assuming Drew Timme replaces Petrusev in the starting lineup, the only player getting real minutes off the bench will be Admon Gilder, a guard. The Zags will thus be forced to play small. The Zags are the lone team in the nation to have six players averaging double-digit scoring per game, with a seventh player at 9.5 points per outing.
