This was always going to be a rather strange basketball season given how things have gone with the pandemic. It’s not every player or team that handles the current level of uncertainty very well, but there are a few who seem to thrive when the going gets tough. With that in mind, perhaps we shouldn’t be that surprised to see some unexpected stars rise to the occasion this season. We cannot talk about them all here, but we have picked out a few players who have seen their stock rise in a big way to this point in the college basketball season. Let’s take a closer look at those players so you can keep betting against their College Basketball odds.
Surprise Star College Basketball Players to this Point in the Season
Jalen Wilson, Kansas Jayhawks
The redshirt freshman came into the NCAA in 2019 ranked #53 in that class. Last year, he only had 2 minutes of court time before suffering an ankle injury that kept him out for the remainder of the season. While Wilson is a nice piece to have in the team, no one saw him having the season that he is delivering right now. He is second in the team in scoring, averaging just shy of 14 PPG, but he is miles ahead of everyone in rebounding, averaging over 7 per game. He also has an FG% of 47.0, which is the best on the Jayhawks. This is definitely a breakout season for Wilson.
Liam Robbins, Minnesota Golden Gophers
At 11-4 on the season, the Minnesota Golden Gophers are a pleasant surprise in 2021. They have been boosted by an unbeaten record at home, wins over ranked teams, and the play of Liam Robbins. It has been on the defensive side of the court where Robbins has truly excelled, leading the team in rebounding and blocks. That said, he has also chipped in very nicely on offense, averaging just shy of 14 PPG this season. The fact that the Golden Gophers have just 3 players averaging double-digit points per game gives you an idea of just how influential he has been to this team.
Cameron Thomas, LSU Tigers
The LSU Tigers are one of the teams that have been negatively impacted by cancellations and postponements in the first half, but they have still managed to put together a 10-3 record to this point in the season. The Tigers are averaging a touch over 85 PPG, which is 13th best in the league right now, but what is truly staggering is that Cameron Thomas is accounting for more than a quarter of those points, as he is putting up 22 PPG eight now. That has him in the top 10 in scoring in college basketball. It’s an astonishing first year for Thomas and you have to wonder if he will be back for a second or whether we will be seeing him in the NBA next season.
The players we have mentioned here are all having amazing seasons, but given the surprising nature of their performances, it is going to be interesting to see if they can maintain it all the way to the end. We will be keeping a close eye on all three.
