Top 25 Most Overrated & Underrated NCAAB Teams

Written by on November 16, 2020

Once the AP Top 25 is released, you know that the college basketball season isn’t too far away! With games starting next week, we will get to see what teams are overrated and which teams are underrated. Let’s take a look at some teams that we think have been rated too high in the AP Top 25 and which teams should have been ranked higher. That being said, let’s get right to it so you can get set all of your bets and place them against our College Basketball odds.

College Basketball Top 25: Most Overrated & Underrated Teams

Overrated

  • No. 5 Iowa

Even though the Hawkeyes return all five starters from last year’s team that would’ve made the NCAA tournament, we still think that the Hawkeyes are rated a little too high. Iowa will need to be better defensively if they want to stay inside the top 10. Iowa’s schedule is also going against them.

The Big Ten has seven teams in the preseason top 25, so somewhere along the line, the Hawkeyes will lose a few games and will end up dropping out of the top 10. Luka Garza is a great player and will do great things, but Iowa isn’t quite as good as their rating.

  • No. 6 Kansas

Even though Bill Self’s program is a perennial top 10 program, we think that their #6 ranking is a little too high. Kansas lost their top two scorers from last year’s team. Self has a nice class of freshmen, but this isn’t one of his better classes.

The Big 12 has some good squads this season, so Kansas could lose a few games in league play. Kansas has earned the recognition, but this ranking is probably based on the success the program has had in the past.

  • No. 25 Michigan

Even though Juwan Howard has a nice group of incoming freshmen and graduate transfers, we’re not ready to put the Wolverines into the top 25. Michigan only returns three players who averaged six points or more.

Their best returning starter, Isaiah Livers, was very inconsistent last season, so we’re not really sure how good he is. Juwan Howard is a good coach, but we need to see more before putting them into the top 25.

Underrated

  • No. 22 UCLA

Since Mick Cronin has arrived in Los Angeles, he has changed the culture of the Bruins program. UCLA brings back most of its scoring from last season, and they finished off the season strong, as they won seven of their last eight games.

The starting lineup should be full of talent. When things are all said and done, the Bruins could possibly be the best team in a very strong Pac 12.

  • No. 11 Creighton

Greg McDermott’s program has been overlooked in the past, and even though this is the highest that they’ve been ranked in the preseason, they could be even better than this. Last year’s co-Big East champions return five of their top six players.

McDermott’s teams are typically some of the best offensive teams in the game, so if they can defend, they should be a top-10 team.

  • No. 12 Tennessee

Even though last year didn’t go as well as expected, Rick Barnes has a very strong group in Knoxville. With four returning players and two five-star recruits in Jaden Springer and Keon Barnes, the Volunteers should be a force to be reckoned with in the SEC. We think that the Vols will be a top-10 team capable of making a run at the Final Four.
