Why Bet on Yale?

Yale was the Ivy League regular-season and tournament champion. Alex Copeland scored 25 points to lead five players in double figures as the Bulldogs rolled to a 97-85 victory over Harvard in the championship game of the Ivy League Tournament. Copeland, who was 9-of-14 from the field and added seven assists, was named the tournament most valuable player. Yale shot 60.4 percent from the field and scored at least 90 points for the eighth time this season.

The victory avenged two losses to Harvard in the regular season. The Bulldogs are back in the NCAA Tournament for the second time in the last four years and fifth time overall. Yale’s last NCAA tournament appearance in 2016 broke a 55-year drought for the school. The Bulldogs upset Baylor in the first round before losing close to Duke.

Miye Oni was named Ivy League Player of the Year. Oni is the third Bulldog to win the award, joining Paul Maley, the 1988 recipient, and Justin Sears, who won the award in both 2015 and 2016. Oni also was a unanimous selection to the All-Ivy first team. He was joined on the first team by Copeland.

Oni is third in the league in scoring (17.4 ppg.), third in assists (3.6 per game), eighth in rebounding (6.4 rpg.), sixth in free throw percentage (.761), third in three-point field goal percentage (.393), fifth in three-point field goals made (2.0 per game) and sixth in blocked shots (1.3 per game). Copeland was second in the league in free throw percentage (.838), fourth in assists (3.3 per game), eighth in steals (1.3 per game) and 10th in scoring (13.3 ppg.). He established a new school record by making 40 consecutive free throws.

Yale’s success is driven by offensive firepower. The Bulldogs play a fast-paced style and have the scorers to attack at any moment. Yale led the Ivy in a host of offensive statistical categories, such as points per game, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, and turnover rate.

Why Bet on LSU?

The Tigers are without Coach Will Wade, who has been suspended indefinitely for his alleged role in recruiting violations. He missed the final game of the regular season and LSU’s SEC Tournament opening loss to Florida Gators. Not likely he ever coaches at LSU again. The university benched Wade after Yahoo Sports reported on a 2017 phone conversation earlier this month. The call between Wade and a middleman tied up in allegations of illegal recruiting tactics features the coach apparently discussing a “strong-ass offer” he made in the recruitment of a prospect.

That prospect is current freshman Javonte Smart, who is eligible to play. Guard Javonte Smart did return from suspension and score 13 points in 31 minutes in the Tigers’ 76-73 loss to Florida in the SEC quarterfinals.

Yale vs LSU is going to be a close one.

LSU (26-6) won the 2019 SEC regular-season title — it’s first since 2009 — with a 16-2 record. The Tigers earned a berth into the “Big Dance” for the 22nd time in program history and the first since 2015. LSU, which has a 24-24 record in tournament play, has reached the Final Four four times in school history, 1953, 1981, 1986 and 2006. The Tigers will be returning to the site of the first two rounds of the 2006 NCAA Championship when LSU defeated Iona and Texas A&M en route to the NCAA Final Four.

LSU had the SEC’s second-best offense because it feasted on point-blank field goal attempts (1,090 shots inside restricted area) and drew fouls, scoring 22 percent of its 81.6 points per game at the line. As good as the Tigers are on the offensive glass (fourth in the nation), they are equally bad on the other end (271st), allowing teams to snag 30.6 percent of their missed shots.

Yale and LSU have met one time prior to this NCAA Tournament, meeting the Tigers in the 1969 Rainbow Classic in Pistol Pete Maravich’s senior season at LSU. Yale won the championship game matchup, 97-94.
