Odds to Win the Big 12 Conference Championship
  • Texas Tech +140
  • Kansas +325
  • Kansas State +340
  • Iowa State +460
  • Texas +1300
  • Baylor +1400
  • Oklahoma +1500
  • TCU +2700
  • Oklahoma State +7000
  • West Virginia +8900

Which of the favorites deserves backing to win the 2019 Big 12 Conference Championship?

Iowa State only offers +460 odds. The Cyclones are the beneficiaries of a conference tournament with only 10 teams. No way Iowa State should offer odds less than +1000 to beat Kansas State, Kansas, or Texas Tech. Toss the Cyclones before moving on with your handicapping.

Kansas is a solid choice at +325, but the Jayhawks aren’t as talented this season as they have been in season’s past. Bill Self doesn’t have that one player ala Devonte’ Graham who can take over the entire tournament and bend Rock Chalk’s opponents to his will.

Kansas State is a good team, but they aren’t on Texas Tech’s level, which is why the Red Raiders, although favored at +140, should win the Big 12 Tournament. Texas Tech only allows 58.6 points per game. Only Virginia, a likely 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament, allows less points per game than Texas Tech.

Not only that, but the Red Raiders average 73 points per game. They average 47.2% from the field and 36.9% from three. Texas Tech can play any style and beat you. They ride a 9-game win streak into the Big 12 Tournament and should have their competition over a barrel.

Of the less than +2700 choices, which team has the best shot of upsetting the favorites?

Oklahoma, Texas and Baylor are almost carbon copies of each other. Of the 3, Oklahoma deserves the most attention to win the conference tournament. Texas is 1-4 on the moneyline in their last 5 with losses to Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas Tech, and TCU.

Baylor is 0-3 on the moneyline in their last 3 with losses to Kansas State, Oklahoma State, and Kansas. Oklahoma hasn’t played great, but they beat Kansas 81-68 a couple of games ago. At least the Sooners have some momentum, not a lot but some, heading into the Big 12 Conference Tournament.

Does TCU, Oklahoma State, or West Virginia have any chance of winning the 2019 Big 12 Conference Championship?

At 19-12, TCU doesn’t have the worst record in the Big 12. The Horned Frogs have no shot if they face Texas Tech in the Big 12 Tournament Finals, but if they take on Kansas, they might have a chance. TCU pushed Kanas to overtime in a 77-82 loss on Feb. 11.

The Horned Frogs must get to the finals and hope they don’t end up facing Texas Tech or Kansas State along the way, but at least they’ll give their backers a chance. West Virginia is horrendous this season while Oklahoma State has been almost as bad as the Mountaineers.

If you want to back a massive dog to win the Big 12 Tournament, TCU’s probably the play.
