As we head into the final weeks of the college basketball season, we are all starting to look ahead to March Madness. The excitement is real, especially after seeing the tournament cancelled in 2020. The big question at this point, though, is about who will end the regular season with the #1 ranking in the AP and Coaches Polls. If we are being honest, it looks very much like a 2-horse race at this point, with the Gonzaga Bulldogs and Baylor Bears sitting in first and second, respectively. Both teams have unbeaten records, and both want that top spot, but who will nab it? Let’s take a closer look so you can continue betting against their College Basketball odds.
Baylor | Gonzaga: Top 2 AP/Coaches rankings – Who will win the race?
One thing that we already know for sure is that the Bulldogs are going to win the regular season WCC Championship, as they are a perfect 10-0 in conference play and 3 ½ games up on their closes rival. Gonzaga is currently 18-0 overall and now have just 3 games left to play on their schedule. Given their opponents, they really need to win out to maintain that #1 spot once all has been said and done.
The 3 games that they have remaining are certainly of the winnable variety, but let’s look at those matchups to see how things might go. First up is a road trip to face the San Francisco Dons, a team they beat 85-62 earlier this season. They will close things put with a pair of home games against Saint Mary’s and San Diego. Again, the are both teams that the Bulldogs have already handled easily this season. They beat St. Mary’s 73-59, while also beating San Diego 90-62, with both of those wins coming on the road.
The Baylor Bears are a perfect 17-0 this season, but the problem that have right now is that they are dealing with a COVID outbreak that has negatively impacted the program. They have now missed 5-straight games due to postponement, with their next scheduled game not coming until February 20. If they do come back at that point, they will have 3 games remaining on their regular season schedule, which we will take a look at now.
Next up would be a home game against ranked Oklahoma State, a team that they blew out when they met them on the road earlier this season. They would them have Iowa State at home before closing out the regular season with a tricky game on the road against the Kansas Jayhawks. Again, these are both teams that the Bears have already beaten this season, but you do have to wonder how this long layoff will affect them when they finally return to action.
Who Finishes #1?
There is still some uncertainty surrounding the Baylor Bears and their remaining schedule, which is certainly tougher than what the Bulldogs have ahead of them. Assuming both teams win out, I still think it will be Gonzaga who ends the season in the #1 spot.
