As we enter Christmas week, final exams are over, and schools are on Winter break. Conference play is now under way, so we’re going to see some more competitive games. Some teams have decided to take a few days off so that their players could go home and spend Christmas with their families. We have seen the number of games postponed or cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic decrease, so that is a step in the right direction. Let’s take a look at some of the top matchups that we’ll see on Tuesday so you can wager against their College Basketball odds.
NCAA Basketball COVID-19 Update – December 21st Edition
(8) West Virginia @ (5) Kansas
Bob Huggins will bring his Mountaineers to Allen Fieldhouse for a key early conference matchup with the Jayhawks. This could be the most talented group that Huggins has had in his tenure at West Virginia. Gone are the days of just having big, bruising athletes. Huggins now has a nice mixture of guards and bigs that can put up points and defend.
As for Kansas, many were looking at this group as one of the least-talented groups that Bill Self has had at Kansas. Kansas has proved their doubters wrong as they have gone 3-1 against Top 25 opponents this season. Even though they’ve had to squeak out the wins, the Jayhawks have moved all the way to #5 in the rankings.
The winner of this game should solidify their position among the top two or three teams in the Big 12.
Purdue @ (3) Iowa
Purdue comes into Iowa City with a 7-1 record, with their only loss coming to #24 Clemson in the ACC-Big 10 Challenge. Purdue owns victories over Miami, Notre Dame, and #20 Ohio State. Iowa will be a team unlike any other that Purdue has seen this season.
Iowa comes into this one on the heels of a tough loss to #1 Gonzaga. Gonzaga was on fire from beyond the arc and outrebounded Iowa in the first half to take a commanding lead. Iowa played evenly with the Zags in the second half.
Luka Garza is averaging over 30 points per game for the Hawkeyes and is the leading candidate for the player of the year. Besides Garza, Iowa has a team that can light up the scoreboard from behind the arc. Iowa is one of the top scoring teams in the country. If they can stop their opponents from scoring, the Hawkeyes are very hard to beat.
(22) North Carolina @ North Carolina State
This ACC rivalry game is always very competitive. The Tar Heels are coming off of a big victory over Kentucky in the CBS Sports Classic. Roy Williams’ team is following the trend of recent Tar Heel teams, getting off to a slow start, but looking primed and ready for a postseason run at season’s end.
As for the Wolfpack, they’ll enter this one with a 4-1 record. They lost their most recent game to a very strong St. Louis squad. NC State has missed some games this season due to COVID-19 issues. Even though this isn’t a real strong Wolfpack squad, this game always seems to bring out the best in NC State, so we could see a very competitive matchup.
