Why Bet on LSU?

LSU beat No. 14 Yale by five in Round 1 and then won a 69-67 decision over No. 6 Maryland in Round 2. Tremont Waters drove by three defenders and scooped in a banking layup with 1.6 seconds remaining for the victory against the Terps, who failed to get off a shot from midcourt before the final buzzer.

After leading by nine at the half and as many as 15 in the game, LSU (28-6) found it tough going against the Maryland zone in the second half as the Tigers shot just 6-of-28 (21.4 percent) before Waters’ layup. The Terps rallied to take a lead for the first time with 5:52 to play. The game was tied six times in the closing minutes.

Waters, who scored his 1,000th career point early in the second half, finished with 12 points, five assists, and two steals. For the second time in as many games, Skylar Mays led the Tigers in scoring with 14 points including a three-pointer with 40 seconds to play that gave the Tigers a short-lived three-point lead.

LSU advanced to play in its 10th round of 16 in program history, it’s fifth in the 64/68 team era (since 1985). LSU) improved to 13-4 away from home in 2018-19 including 9-0 in SEC regular-season play. Only three LSU squads have won more than 13 games away from home in a season: 1980 (16), 1981 and 1987 (14). The Tigers’ 28 wins is the most by an LSU squad since 1999-2000, when John Brady’s Tigers won 28 en route to the NCAA Sweet 16.

The Tigers remain without suspended head coach Will Wade. One point of concern: They have also been outscored in second halves of this NCAA tournament by 18 points combined in the two wins. This will be the 11th time LSU has faced a team that is in the Big Ten at the time of the meeting with LSU 2-8 in those games. LSU has lost to Indiana five times and Michigan State, Wisconsin and Purdue once.
