Nearly every year since the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 schools, a No. 12 seed has beaten a No. 5. Look no further for that type of upset on Friday when red-hot Oregon is a short March Madness betting underdog against fifth-seeded Wisconsin in South Region action. The total is absurdly low between great defensive teams.

Why Bet on Oregon?
Oregon wouldn’t be in the NCAA Tournament had it not won the Pac-12 Tournament. The Ducks were preseason Pac-12 favorites but underachieved most of the season after superstar freshman Bol Bol (son of Manute Bol) went down with a season-ending foot injury after just nine games. A former top-five recruit, the 7-foot-2 Bol had been a dominant force during his nine healthy games in Eugene. He was averaging 21 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks. Bol also was shooting 52 percent from 3-point range, an attribute that intrigues NBA executives because of his size.
The Ducks destroyed regular-season champion Washington by 20 points in the tournament title game. In winning an eighth straight game overall, Oregon held Washington to 48 points, the lowest total in Pac-12 Championship game history. In four tournament games, the Ducks allowed just 57.0 points per contest. Payton Pritchard scored 20 points with six rebounds, seven assists and four steals vs. the Huskies, while fellow all-tournament honoree Louis King added 15 points.
Oregon set combined Pac-12 Tournament records for most points (297), most field goals (107), most steals (36) and most blocks (23). Kenny Wooten set the individual record for most combined blocks in a Pac-12 Tournament with 10. Oregon became the second team to win the Pac-12 Tournament by winning four games, joining Colorado in 2012. The Ducks became the third No. 6 seed to win the Pac-12 Tournament, joining Colorado in 2012 and USC in 2009.
On Feb. 23, Oregon was 15-12 (10th place in the Pac-12 at 6-8). Then came the streak of eight wins in a row. After allowing UCLA to score 62 points in the second half, the Ducks held their next six opponents to less than 62 points for the entire game.
During the eight-game winning streak, the Ducks are outscoring their opponents by nearly 18 points per game (72.0 to 54.2). Opponents are shooting 34.6 percent from the field and 23.1 percent from three.
This is Oregon’s sixth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last seven years, and overall it is the Ducks’ ninth straight postseason appearance. The last time Oregon was sent to San Jose for the NCAA Tournament was 2013. That season, Oregon won the Pac-12 Tournament and wound up in San Jose as the #12 seed. The Ducks knocked out #5 Oklahoma State 68-55 before taking down #4 Saint Louis 74-57 to advance to the Sweet 16 where they lost to top-seeded Louisville 77-69.

Why Bet on Wisconsin?
Wisconsin was knocked out of the Big Ten Tournament semifinals in a 67-55 loss to eventual champion Michigan State. Wisconsin star Ethan Happ bounced back nicely from a shaky performance in the quarterfinals against Nebraska, finishing with 20 points, six rebounds, and four blocked shots. Kobe King had 13 points, but the Badgers shot just 35 percent from the field. Nate Reuvers, who had 14 points in the victory over the Cornhuskers, was 0 for 7 from the field and failed to score. D’Mitrik Trice had seven points on 3-for-10 shooting before fouling out with about a minute left.
The No. 1 player in Ken Pomeroy’s Player of the Year rankings, second-team All-American Ethan Happ is trying to become just the 2nd player in the last 20 years to average 16 ppg, 10 rpg & 4 apg. Happ is 1 of 6 players in NCAA history to record 2,000 points, 1,000 boards and 400 assists, joining Oscar Robertson, Larry Bird, Danny Ferry, Stacey Augmon & John Konchar.

The Badgers are making their 24th trip to the Big Dance overall and are one of five schools to appear in the NCAA tournament in 20 of the last 21 seasons. Wisconsin is 38-22 (.633) all-time in the NCAA tournament, reaching four Final Fours and 10 Sweet 16s. The Badgers have made six Sweet 16 appearances in the last 8 years, which is tied for most in the nation.
The Badgers have made the NCAA tournament’s second weekend in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. Wisconsin has advanced to the Sweet 16 or better in 4 of the last 5 seasons, and 6 of the last 8 years. No team has made more appearances over either time frame.
Over the last 5 seasons, Wisconsin has posted a record of 30-10 (.750) during the month of March. That is the best winning percentage and most wins among Big Ten teams and includes a record of 12-2 in the NCAA tournament.
The Ducks (23-12) and Badgers (23-10) met in the second round of the tournament in both 2014 and 2015, with Wisconsin winning both, in Milwaukee and then Omaha, Neb. Both of those Wisconsin teams went on to the Final Four. Overall, UW holds a 5-2 advantage in the all-time series with Oregon, including wins in the last four matchups.
