Why Bet on Virginia Tech?
The Hokies bounced back from a blowout loss at Virginia with an 87-71 home win over Wake Forest on Saturday. The Hokies started pulling away midway through the first half. They trailed 16-15 after a Brandon Childress 3-pointer with 12:08 left in the half, but they then went on an 11-2 run to take the lead for good. Five different players scored in that run, with Ty Outlaw and Justin Robinson hitting 3-pointers.
Tech shot 59.3 percent in the first 20 minutes and played well on the defensive end, too, holding the Demon Deacons to 31.6 percent shooting from the floor. Nickeil Alexander-Walker scored 24 points to lead Tech. Alexander-Walker made 7 of 12 from the floor, including three 3-pointers, and he went 7 of 9 from the free-throw line. He also grabbed seven rebounds and handed out four assists.
For the eighth time this season and for the second time in ACC play, Tech shot better than 50 percent from the floor. The Hokies are 8-0 when shooting better than 50 percent. The Hokies scored at least 80 points for the 10th time this season and moved to 10-0 when scoring at least 80. Tech moved to 14-1 when its opponent shoots less than 50 percent.
Virginia Tech is fourth nationally and leads the ACC in three-point field goal percentage, at 41.8 percent. Tech leads the ACC and is 18th nationally in three-point field goals made per game, at 10.0. Tech has made at least 10 three-pointers in 10 of the 17 games this season, including a school-record 18 made three-pointers in the win over Central Connecticut State. The top individual in three-point field goal percentage in the ACC is Ty Outlaw.
The Hokies are 1-1 against ranked teams this season.
Why Bet on North Carolina?
UNC comes off an 85-76 win at Miami on Saturday. Cameron Johnson went 5 for 7 from three-point range and led all scorers with 22 points. It was the fifth time this year he scored 20 points (13th career), the eighth time he led UNC in scoring and the third time this year he made at least five threes in a game (five at Wofford, six vs. Gonzaga).
Kenny Williams scored a season-high 16 points, tied his season high with three three-pointers (also at Michigan) and had seven assists and no turnovers. Williams leads UNC in assists with 72. He had a combined seven assists in the previous five games. Williams had a career-high number of assists (7) without a turnover. His previous best was 5/0 twice as a sophomore against Kentucky and Northern Iowa.
Carolina shot 55.0 percent from the floor for the game. It was the second-highest percentage in a game this year (highest in an ACC game). It was the highest since the Tennessee Tech game (.554). It was the first time in eight games UNC shot 50 percent from the floor (first time since Gonzaga).
Carolina shot 60 percent from the floor in the second half. It was the best second-half shooting game of the season and matched the highest in any half (also shot 60 percent in the first half vs. Stanford). Carolina’s first 10 field goals in the second half were two-pointers. The Tar Heels then made five of their next six baskets from three-point range – three by Johnson and two by Williams. Carolina had 26 assists, second most this season and most since UNC had 29 against Tennessee Tech. That takes this year’s team average to 19.4 assists per game, which would be the most for any Tar Heel team since the 1990-91 squad averaged 20.0 per game.
Williams has almost as many assists this year (72) as he did in 37 games last year (88). There’s a chance at least three Tar Heels will surpass 100 assists for the season, something that’s only been done three times in the Roy Williams era. Two of those teams—the 2009 and 2016 squads—reached the national title game.
