NCAA Football Miami Hurricanes Betting Tips for Upcoming 2023 Season

Written by on July 18, 2023

The first year as head coach at his alma mater Miami was a very mixed bag for Mario Cristobal. He recruited well and helped the program add a lot of money through fundraising but the product on the field was a disappointment. What to expect from the 2023 Hurricanes? Here’s the preview for your college football betting odds to win the NCAA National Championship.

The Canes finished 5-7 in Cristobal’s first season, including an utterly embarrassing 45-31 defeat at home to Middle Tennessee on Sept. 24. That program had never beaten a ranked team, which the Canes were at the time, but they clearly should not have been. MTSU never trailed, forced turnovers on Miami’s first three possessions, stopped the Hurricanes on downs on three other occasions and scored on passes of 69, 71 and 98 yards.

There were many reasons why UM took a step back last year but the biggest was QB Tyler Van Dyke regressing and getting hurt. He was a top Heisman candidate entering 2022 and considered a potential 2023 first-round draft pick in the NFL but Van Dyke had to stay in school for this year to rebuild his career.

In the first four games last year, he didn’t pass for more than 261 yards and had two games under 200 yards while throwing four TDs and three interceptions. Then he got on a roll against North Carolina and Virginia Tech, throwing for 496 yards with three TDs vs. UNC and 342 yards with two scores against the Hokies. Miami’s offense appeared headed in the right direction, but then Van Dyke hurt his shoulder against Duke and was never the same. He ended the season with a 63.2 completion percentage and 10 TDs with five INTs.

Van Dyke considered transferring out but decided to stay and is coming off a spring game performance in which he looked sharp in the new spread offense installed by coordinator Shannon Dawson, throwing for 288 yards and three touchdowns while completing 22-of-29 attempts. Van Dyke generated eight passing plays that went for at least 20 yards during the scrimmage as the UM attack flashed some explosive potential.

Dawson replaced the fired Josh Gattis, who lasted just one season. He won the Broyles Award for top assistant in 2021 while at Michigan but clearly wasn’t a fit at Miami. The Hurricanes averaged 369.4 yards and 23.6 points per game, which were just ninth and tenth in the ACC, respectively. Dawson spent the past four seasons at the University of Houston, including the last three as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. In Dawson’s three seasons as quarterbacks coach with the Cougars (2020-22), Houston quarterbacks combined to throw 87 touchdown passes (13th nationally) behind a 65.3 completion percentage (19th nationally) and 10,008 passing yards (21st nationally).

The offensive line, which is Cristobal’s specialty, should be terrific this year as Miami added a pair of starters in the transfer portal, plucking Matt Lee away from UCF and getting star guard Javion Cohen from Alabama. Cristobal also signed two five-star freshmen on the O-Line. Most of last year’s receivers return, but Van Dyke needs someone to become a No. 1. That could be Alabama and Louisville transfer Tyler Harrell.

On defense, the new coordinator is Lance Guidry. He spent the past two seasons as the defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Marshall and Guidry’s defense ranked in the top five nationally in FBS in several key statistics, including third down defense (first), stop rate (second), pass efficiency defense (third), defensive efficiency (third), yards per play (third), turnovers gained (fifth) and rushing defense (fifth).

For the first time since 2006, Miami has a returning All-American to anchor its defense, with safety Kamren Kinchens back. Kinchens’ six interceptions were tied for second in the nation last year. Fellow safety James Williams is a former five-star recruit, as is defensive lineman Leonard Taylor III.

There are no divisions in the ACC any longer so Miami doesn’t have the benefit of playing in the weaker Coastal Division. UM should go 4-0 out of conference – it opens on Sept. 1 vs. MAC school Miami of Ohio — but likely loses at North Carolina, at Florida State and home to Clemson in conference.

Pro Football Focus ranked Miami’s 2023 slate of games as the sixth easiest in the country overall. Not sure I agree with that but it’s based off opponents’ 2022 records.
