5 Sure Fire Bets For College Football Week 1

Written by on August 31, 2016

Picking sure fire winners in Week 1 of the college football season really isn’t that difficult, especially if you stick with the games where the bigger schools are playing much lesser opposition. The problem with those types of wagers is that you are only going to grow your bankroll by a few pennies. For me, I like looking at the point spreads to see where there may be some value to be found, as that can make those lopsided games worth betting odds. I have chosen 5 games from Week 1, going with the spread in each of them, so let’s take a look at my selections.

5 Sure Fire Bets For College Football Week 1

Tennessee Vs Appalachian State – Thursday, Sept 1

There are a lot of people who have the Tennessee Volunteers as an overwhelming favorite to win the SEC East this year, but I am no entirely sold on them just yet. Tennessee is coming into this one as a 20.5-point favorite, and I see that as a little high. Appalachian State had a very solid run defense last season, finishing 27th overall, and they have a good QB who can chuck the ball around a little bit. Tennessee should build up a nice lead here, but they may give up points late as they start relaxing. Appalachian State +20.5

Georgia Vs North Carolina

This is a game that we will be taking a much closer look at this week, but for now, let’s do a quick overview. This is listed as a neutral site game, but since it’s at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, expect to see nothing but red and black. This is the first game of the Kirby Smart era, and you can bet that the Bulldogs are going to be fired up. Nick Chubb will be back at RB, and 5-star QB recruit Jacob Eason is going to get playing time. I think Georgia rolls in this one. Georgia -2.5

Oklahoma Vs Houston

The Sooners are another team that are getting a lot of love prior to the start of the season, with many looking at them as a potential national champion. While I agree that the have a shot, I think that their 11.5-point favoritism is a little too much for this one. The Cougars are a very good football team, and are essentially playing a home game at the NRG Stadium. I like them to cover. Houston +11.5

Clemson Vs Auburn

There are a ton of great games in Week 1 of the college football season, and this is certainly one of the more intriguing match-ups. Clemson came very close to winning it all last year, and have enough starters returning this season to make them a legitimate playoff threat. This is a tough opening game for them, but they should still be too strong for a decent Auburn team. I think Clemson wins this one by double digits. Clemson -7.5

Notre Dame Vs Texas

It’s a little unique in college football, but we are getting some Sunday action this season, with Notre Dame and Texas going head to head. Going back through the past 3 seasons, Notre Dame have posted an 0-8 SU record when going on the road favored to win by less than a TD. I like trends, and that is one that makes their 3.5-point favoritism here look a little shaky. I always thought of this as a field goal game in the making, which is why I like Texas ATS. Texas +3.5
