How to Bet Miami vs LSU College Football Week 1 Lines

Written by on August 23, 2018

One great thing in recent years about the opening week of the college football season is that the TV networks smartened up and put a game on Sunday night with no NFL competition. This year, it’s No. 8 Miami vs. No. 25 LSU in the Advocare Classic on Sept. 2 from Houston. The Hurricanes are slight college football odds favorites.

Why Bet on Miami?

The Canes won their first 10 games last year and rose to No. 2 in the CFP Top 25 but then faded and lost their final three. Senior QB Malik Rosier had to win his job again in camp and did – but might have a short leash. Rosier accounted for 31 touchdowns last season, 26 passing and five rushing. That eclipsed Vinny Testaverde’s previous school record of 30 set in 1986. Rosier also set the school total offense record with 3,588 yards in a season. That broke Stephen Morris’ school record of 3,415 set in 2012. However, Rosier also led the ACC with 14 interceptions. His 54 percent completion percentage was second to last. The running game also should be strong. Deejay Dallas, Travis Homer, and Mark Walton all averaged over 5.0 yards a carry last year, with Walton averaging 7.6 yards per carry. For the collective team, Miami’s running game averaged 5.0 yards per carry. With Homer and Dallas both returning, and adding five-star freshman Lorenzo Lingard, expect Miami to continue to bruise on the ground. UM’s defense was terrific in 2017, which bore the “turnover chain.” That group is led by safety Jaquan Johnson, who was named a preseason All-American. Johnson led the Hurricanes in tackles and forced fumbles in 2017. He also tied for the team lead in interceptions, interception returns for touchdowns and fumble recoveries last season. Linebacker Shaq Quarterman and cornerback Michael Jackson were also named to some All-America teams. Johnson, Quarterman, linebackers Michael Pinckney and Zach McCloud and defensive end Joe Jackson are all entering their third seasons as starters. This is the first regular season meeting between the two schools since 1988 and just the third overall meeting since 1969. The Tigers beat Miami in the 2005 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, the last meeting between the ACC and SEC schools. Overall, the schools have played 12 times, dating back to 1946. LSU leads 9-3.

Why Bet on LSU?

The Tigers are a bit short-handed for this one with three players of varying importance suspended. LSU offensive lineman Ed Ingram was arrested Aug. 2 with two counts of aggravated sexual assault and has been suspended. Last season, Ingram played in 13 games and started 12 for the Tigers at right guard. Meanwhile, linebacker Tyler Taylor was suspended in August after his May arrest for his alleged involvement in a robbery as the getaway driver. Wide receiver Drake Davis was suspended Saturday after he allegedly broke his ex-girlfriend’s ribs in a fight. Davis played in all 13 games for LSU last season, catching three passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns, including an 87-yard score against Syracuse. While LSU has major questions on offense, the defense should be fantastic. Linebacker Devin White and cornerback Greedy Williams were named first-team Associated Press Preseason All-Americans. White and Williams return as the leaders of an LSU defense that ranked among the best in the nation last year, allowing only 18.9 points and 316.2 total yards per game. Miami vs LSU is the top match scheduled for September 2nd. White and Williams became the first set of players from the same team to lead the SEC in tackles and interceptions in the same year since 1993. White paced the league with 10.2 tackles a contest and ranked No. 2 in the conference in total tackles with 133. Williams, as a redshirt freshman, topped the conference in both interceptions (6) and defended passes(13). LSU’s Ed Orgeron is on perhaps the hottest seat in the nation. The first three weeks of the season are critical for Orgeron with games against Miami and Auburn away from home. LSU needs to start well and establish some momentum. Otherwise, the pressure will only intensify, particularly with one of the toughest schedules in college football. This is the Tigers’ second regular-season game on a Sunday since at least 1908. The only other time LSU played a regular-season Sunday game in the 110-year period was 2002 when Virginia Tech posted a 26-8 win over the Tigers in the season opener in Blacksburg, Va. It’s LSU’s fourth appearance in AT&T Stadium in a nine-season period, but the first since 2013. LSU beat Texas A&M in the 2011 Cotton Bowl, 41-24, before opening the 2011 season with a 41-27 win over Oregon. In the 2013 season opener, LSU defeated TCU, 37-27.
