Boise State at New Mexico Free Pick & Lines
No Group of 5 team has come close to crashing the College Football Playoff yet. That could change this season if No. 19 Boise State runs the table, although it would have to hope Houston and some other powerhouses lose once. The Broncos should have little trouble as a big betting favorite on college football lines Friday night in Mountain West play at New Mexico.
Here’s a Look at the Boise State at New Mexico Free Pick, Lines & TV Info
Why Bet on Boise State?
The Broncos are off a less-than- impressive 21-10 win over Utah State. Jeremy McNichols accounted for 226 all-purpose yards, including 132 yards rushing and a 61-yard touchdown reception, to lead BSU. The Broncos (4-0, 1-0) led 7-3 at halftime before taking control in the second half with a pair of touchdown passes by Brett Rypien and a stout defensive performance. The Aggies were held well below their 26.2 points per game average and narrowly avoided their first game without a touchdown since 2012. The Bronco defense held the Aggies to 71 yards rushing. Through four games, opponents are averaging just 72 yards on the ground against Boise State.
McNichols was named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week. He earned the honor the previous week as well after a career day at Oregon State. McNichols has 89 carries for 504 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground, and 16 receptions for 216 yards and three touchdowns through the air.
The Broncos have won eight straight home games against Utah State, the last loss coming Oct. 19, 1996 (39-14), when the schools were members of the Big West. Boise State has won 17-consecutive conference openers since its last loss, Oct. 16, 1999 (North Texas; 17-10).
Boise State senior cornerback Jonathan Moxey’s mandatory suspension for a targeting penalty will not be subject to appeal. He was flagged due to a hit on Utah State running back Tonny Lindseya, although it looked as if both going for a loose ball. Moxey will be suspended for the first half at New Mexico.
Why Bet on New Mexico?
The Lobos (2-2, 0-1) are off a 48-41 win over San Jose State. New Mexico scored on the second play of the game, and never trailed after that, gouging San José State for 446 yards on the ground. It took just two plays, 75 yards on the ground and 55 seconds for UNM to take the lead for good. Teriyon Gipson went for the first 61 yards, and Tyrone Owens finished the drive with 14 more and quickly it was a 7-0 lead. Both Gipson and Owens rushed for 100 yards, Gipson’s fourth 100-yard rushing game of his career, and Owens’ first.
UNM also dominated time of possession, holding the ball for 37:07. Defensively UNM allowed 41 points, but held San José State to just 2-for- 9 on third down, and scored on an interception. UNM also forced six three-and- outs in the game, including two after the Spartans closed to within 41-34 in the fourth quarter.
New Mexico currently ranks 35th nationally in total defense and 34th in total offense. With UNM averaging 476.0 yards per game, the team would end the regular season with 5,712 yards at that pace, and that would be the best mark in school history.
New Mexico traditionally has struggled against ranked opponents, as the Lobos all-time are just 5-52 overall against teams in the AP Top 25 polls. New Mexico is 3-25 at home against ranked teams, 2-26 on the road, and 0-1 in neutral sites (the 1997 WAC title game). The Lobos last defeated a ranked opponent in 2003 when the Lobos took down No. 23 Utah. UNM’s last home win over a ranked team was back in 1994, when the Lobos defeated No. 21 Utah 23-21.
Last year against Boise State, the Lobo defense faced an onslaught of 115 plays by the Broncos, but they allowed just 24 points and got the final stop needed when Markel Byrd tackled Austin Cotrell at the 4-yard line to preserve a 31-24 win and clinch UNM's bowl eligibility.
