Alabama an 8 ½ favorite versus Ohio State

The Ohio State Buckeyes will enter Monday night’s title game a massive underdog. Most college football handicappers don’t expect the Buckeyes to do much more than show up.

Those thinking Ohio State will roll over Alabama don’t know the team very well. Justin Fields heads to the trophy contest after playing his best game of the season. No defense, even Alabama’s, can stop Fields from throwing for 400 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Bama, though, doesn’t have to stop Justin Fields to beat and cover versus Ohio State. Mac Jones to DeVonta Smith is one of the most devastating QB-WR combinations in college football history. Smith, who won the Heisman Trophy last week, should have no trouble beating the Buckeyes defense.

What does it all mean? Even though it’s difficult to lay the 8 ½, or to accept the 8 ½ versus the Crimson Tide, football handicappers don’t have to do that. They could play the over or under. They could also wait for the game to start and then play it live after seeing exactly which team has the edge.

Auburn hires Bryan Harsin and Michigan extends Harbaugh

The Michigan Wolverines made an interesting, and in some ways surprising, decision. Instead of giving Jim Harbaugh his walking papers, Michigan decided to stick with the former San Francisco 49ers and Stanford Cardinal coach.

Harbaugh heads to the offseason after his worst season as the HC in Ann Arbor. Michigan won 2 games in 2020. They lost 4. Most Wolverines’ fans and college football analysts thought Michigan might send Harbaugh packing.

Cooler heads prevailed. What Michigan realized is that even though Harbaugh isn’t the best coach in college football, he’s the best coach that the Wolverines can get.

On a consistent basis, only four coaches are better than an HC like Harbaugh. Dabo Sweeney at Clemson, Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley, Alabama’s Nick Saban and Ron Day at Ohio State. Unless Michigan knew they could grab one of those coaches, it made no sense to ditch Harbaugh.

Unlike Michigan, Auburn let go of their head coach, Gus Malzahn. The Tigers hired Bryan Harsin from Boise State. Harsin built winning teams year in and year out at Boise. He leaves with an overall record of 69-19.

Harsin has wasted no time putting together his staff. Most coaches that the new HC at Auburn has hired have experience either coaching with him at Boise or at SEC universities. So far, it seems like Harsin wants to prevent the mistakes other coaches leaving other conferences for the SEC have made.

The Southeastern Conference is the most competitive, unique, conference in football. Unless you understand how the other coaches in the SEC think you can’t expect to have much success. You must not only beat those other coaches on the football field, but you must also out recruit those coaches.
