2022 College Football National Championship Odds

Does Alabama’s odds make them an underlay or an overlay?

It’s difficult not to think of Bama as an underlay. After all, the Crimson Tide lost the three most important components to their record shattering offense from last season.

Mac Jones will throw passes for the New England Patriots. Jerry Jeudy will catch passes from Tua Tagovailoa in Miami, and Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith will run routes for the Chicago Bears.

Why wouldn’t we consider Bama’s odds to repeat as champions underlaid? Ah, but this is the Crimson Tide.

Not only did Nick Saban reload, but he reloaded at quarterback. Bryce Young entered the 2020 season as the highest-rated dual threat quarterback from high school.

Young had a great spring last year. His 2021 spring has been better. If you’re an Alabama backer, feel confident about the odds. If you detest Saban and the Tide’s dominance, there are plenty reasons to say the odds make Bama an underlay.

Among Georgia, Ohio State, and Oklahoma, which team offers overlay odds?

Ohio State should take a slight backward step. It won’t be a big enough backward step for some other team to leapfrog the Buckeyes in the Big Ten. But it should be a big enough step back to possibly keep Ohio State from the College Football Playoff.

Georgia doesn’t offer overlay odds because the Dawgs play in the SEC. Georgia is bound to lose at least 2 games. The first should happen on Sep. 4 against Clemson. The second will happen against Alabama in the SEC Championship.

At +700, Oklahoma is an overlay. The schedule is ridiculously easy. Once Spencer Rattler got into a groove last season, he started dominating defenses. The Sooner quarterback returns and is on the short list to win this year’s Heisman Trophy.

Which SEC squad, LSU or Texas A&M, deserves the longer look to win the title?

Texas A&M lost one game last season, but it was a big one. Alabama trounced the Aggies 52-24. So even though A&M ran their regular season table after losing to Bama, the CFP shut out the Aggies.

This season, A&M looks strong enough to challenge Alabama and LSU for the SEC West division. We shouldn’t kid ourselves, though. Texas A&M played great last season because Kellen Mond was their quarterback.

Mond is now a Minnesota Viking. A&M must play Auburn, LSU, and Alabama this season. It’s difficult seeing A&M winning all three.

LSU lost five games last season, but the Tigers were rebuilding after winning the National Championship in 2019. Ed Orgeron’s squad should be one of the best teams in the nation. Give the edge to LSU over Texas A&M.

Is there a team at odds of +2800 or higher that has a shot to win the National Championship?

In 2021, USC could return to the glory years. Kedon Slovis can win the Heisman. He’s good enough. The defense will be rock solid.

The biggest question? The offensive line. If it’s stronger in 2021 than it was in 2020, the Trojans should get close to running the table. No team on USC’s schedule, save for maybe Notre Dame, has as much talent as the Trojans possess.

Right now, USC is the top overlay on the board.
