Last SeasonThe Noles won 38-22 in Gainesville in 2017. Jacob Pugh and Levonta Taylor turned takeaways into touchdowns and helped the Seminoles beat the Gators for the fifth consecutive year. Pugh returned a fumble 16 yards for a score in the first quarter, and Taylor returned an interception 18 yards for another in the second. Gators quarterback Feleipe Franks was responsible for both turnovers. The Seminoles made Franks look lost most of the day, sacking him five times, hitting way more often and forcing four turnovers. It was the first time in series history that FSU scored two defensive touchdowns against the Gators. The Noles nearly had a third as Matthew Thomas’ interception return ended at the 1-yard line.
This is the 63rd meeting all-time. The five-game winning streak by FSU is its longest in the series against the Gators.
Why Bet on Florida?Florida trounced a terrible Idaho team 63-10 last week. Idaho threw a pass on the first snap from scrimmage, which defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson intercepted in stride, and virtually walked into the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown return six seconds into the game. The Vandals’ next possession was a three-and-out that Florida turned into a three-play, 47-yard, 42-second drive, with quarterback Feleipe Franks going 17 yards, also untouched, for a rushing touchdown and two-touchdown lead less than three minutes in. The game was really over already.
Franks threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns in less than a half, the Gators piled up 600 yards of total offense, and the UF defense held Idaho to just 227 yards. Franks had scoring tosses of 52, 3 and 34 yards to go with his rushing touchdown before giving way to true freshman Emory Jones, who added a couple more scoring tosses. The 53-point margin of victory was the largest since beating Eastern Michigan 65-0 for the first win of the ’14 season.
Florida has seven 200-yard rushing games, tying the 2007 Gators for the third-most times it hit that mark in a season since 1996. It only had more in 2008 (9) and 2009 (8). From 2015-17, UF totaled eight such games. UF already has its fifth-highest rushing total (2,254 yards) since 1990. The Gators’ higher totals since 1990 are: 2,445 (2012 – 13 games), 2,602 (2007 – 13 gp), 3,105 (2009 – 14 gp), and 3,326 (2008 – 14 gp).
The Gators have their most games of 500-plus total yards (three) and 350-plus total yards (eight) since 2009, when they did it five and 10 times, respectively. UF has 42 scrimmage touchdowns, 17 more than its 11-game total from 2017, 13 more than its 13-game total in 2016, and three more than its 14-game total in 2015. One more matches its highest total since 2010 (43 in 2010).
This season is just the second time in school history the Gators bounced back from a sub-.500 season with at least eight wins (1979-80 – 0-10-1 to 8-4).
Why Bet on Florida State? The Seminoles must win to extend the nation’s longest bowl streak to 37 seasons and have a chance to tie the all-time record of 42 consecutive winning seasons.
The Noles come off their best effort of the season, knocking off No. 22 Boston College 22-21. The Seminoles’ victory was their first win over a ranked opponent since Dec. 30, 2016, when they defeated No. 6 Michigan in the Capital One Orange Bowl.
The Noles stuffed BC’s star running back, AJ Dillon over and over. While Dillon, the ACC offensive player of the year, broke a few nice runs, his longest carry was for just 16 yards. On the night, the FSU defense held him to 116 yards on a whopping 37 carries.
FSU QB Deondre Francois finished with 322 yards, a touchdown and a pair of interceptions while freshman Keyshawn Helton, making his first start, caught a team-high six passes for 72 yards. And running back Cam Akers continued his recent upward trend with a 14-carry, a 110-yard night that put him over the 100-yard mark for the first time this season.
After scoring only one field goal on four Red Zone opportunities in the season opener vs. Virginia Tech, FSU has scored on 22 of its last 26 Red Zone trips, putting points on the board in 84.6 percent of its Red Zone chances.
The Seminoles rank 2nd in the ACC and tied for 31st in the NCAA in 4th-down defense, holding opponents to a percentage of .423 (11-of-26). FSU is holding its opponents to 3.30 yards per rush, which ranks 2nd in the ACC and 15th in the NCAA. Florida State has kept nine of its 11 opponents under their season yards-per-carry average. Last week, Boston College averaged 2.6 yards per carry after entering the game averaging 4.3 yards per rush in 2018.
