It’s what we call Cupcake Saturday in the SEC! Most schools in the conference are playing some Little Sister of the Poor in a glorified scrimmage ahead of a rivalry game next week. That includes No. 13 Florida as a huge NCAAF betting favorite over Idaho.

Series History

These schools have never played, but they were supposed to on Aug. 30, 2014, but the game was canceled due to unsafe field conditions following more than four hours of lightning delays, accompanied by torrential rains. Initially, kickoff was set for 7 p.m., but lightning caused a nearly-three-hour delay.

At roughly 10 p.m., Idaho booted the opening kickoff, which was returned 64 yards before Bradley Njoku and Jayshawn Jordan made a touchdown-saving tackle. It would be the game’s only play. More lightning struck and the game was delayed again. Ultimately, around midnight, it was declared a no contest.

Why Bet on Idaho?

It’s the season finale for Idaho (4-6), which is probably getting north of $1 million for this beating. The Vandals are a Sun Belt team and have played just one school of note this year, losing their opener a cool 79-13 against Fresno State.

Idaho is off a 46-27 home loss to Montana. The Vandals scored first on a 38-yard field goal from Cade Coffey, but Montana rattled off the next 29 points in a span of 12 minutes and 18 seconds. Idaho outgained Montana 457-420, but the Grizzlies’ 306 first-half yards staked them to a 36-6 advantage at the break.

Idaho quarterback Mason Petrino passed for a career-high 310 yards, tossing two touchdowns and running for another. David Ungerer was Petrino’s top target, catching seven passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. It was Ungerer’s third 100-yard receiving game of the season. Petrino also hit Cutrell Haywood for a score. Isaiah Saunders led the ground attack with a season-high 123 rushing yards, including a career-long 60-yard run in the third quarter.

Saunders now ranks 10th all-time with 2,155 yards in his career and is within 90 yards of jumping three more spots to seventh. Saunders has broken off the longest run of his career in consecutive weeks. A 43-yard touchdown against North Dakota was his longest carry until he ripped off a 60-yard run against Montana.

In an interesting twist, seniors Dorian Clark and David Ungerer were slated to make their collegiate debuts in the 2014 game at Florida. Now it’s their final game. Clark, a native of Jacksonville, has 32 tackles and six pass breakups at cornerback this year. Ungerer leads Idaho with 66 catches, 692 receiving yards, and 1,048 all-purpose yards.

Why Bet on Florida?

The Gators could be looking past this one a bit toward next week’s rivalry game with Florida State. UF (7-3) beat South Carolina 35-31 last week to stop a two-game skid. QB Feleipe Franks accounted for three touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with a little more than four minutes remaining, and the Gators rallied for the win.

Franks dived across the goal line on fourth down from inside the 1-yard line to put the Gators ahead for the first time all day and for good. Coach Dan Mullen said he didn’t hesitate to go for it. The Gators overcame a 17-point deficit in the second half.

Florida, with 21 unanswered points over the final 16 minutes, totaled 528 yards of total offense against South Carolina, with a season-high 367 on the ground. Franks passed for 161 yards and a score without turning the ball over. Jordan Scarlett rushed for a career-high 159 yards, and Lamical Perine had 107 yards and two touchdowns.

Idaho vs Florida should be an easy victory for the Gators.

Florida has posted 525-plus total yards against multiple SEC opponents in the same season for the first time since 2007 when they had 554 scrimmage yards against Tennessee and 537 against South Carolina. Florida has amassed 350-plus total yards in seven games this year, marking the first time since 2009 (10 games) it hit or eclipsed that mark in that many games. Florida has six 200-yard rushing games this year, tying the 2012 Gators for the most such games in a season since the 2009 Gators had eight 200-yard rushing games. The last two seasons, UF totaled six such games.

Florida is the fourth SEC team in the last 15 seasons with multiple 17-point comebacks in a season, joining 2016 Tennessee, 2011 Arkansas, and 2010 Auburn. Florida is the fifth FBS team that finished under .500 last year that has already seven wins this season.

Mullen is the first head coach in school history to win seven games in his debut season after inheriting a Gators team that finished .500 or worse the year prior. Mullen is the only first-year coach to defeat a top-10 CFP team, and he is the only one to beat multiple teams in the CFP rankings.
