There’s really no chance that No. 4 Michigan loses as a huge home NCAAF betting favorite to Indiana on Saturday. Right? It is potentially a huge trap game for the Wolverines ahead of their mega-showdown to close the regular season against rival Ohio State.

Last SeasonMichigan just about always beats Indiana but struggled to last year, winning 27-20 in overtime. Karan Higdon ran 25 yards for a touchdown on the first play of overtime and Tyree Kinnel intercepted a fourth-down pass in the end zone on the final play. Higdon finished with 200 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries. Michigan rushed 44 times for 271 yards, and Indiana rushed 29 times for 80 yards against the Big Ten’s leading defense. The Wolverines outgained the Hoosiers 329-278.
Indiana’s losing streak to Michigan is now 22 games, but the last two times the Wolverines have come to Bloomington it has gone to overtime. The Hoosiers have one victory (1987) against Michigan since 1967.
Why Bet on Indiana? The Hoosiers are off a 34-32 win over Maryland, which could be a big help for IU to make a bowl at now 5-5. Indiana’s offense effectively capitalized on the first three Terps turnovers, turning them into 17 big points. And the last one sealed the win. It came with 52 seconds left, a caused-fumble by Kayton Samuels and a recovery by senior classmate Nike Sykes at the Maryland 47.
Maryland gained 542 yards (compared to IU’s 374, though the Hoosiers averaged almost the same as the Terps per play) and controlled the ball for 39:12 compared to IU’s 20:42. But IU won the turnover battle. IU has 24 takeaways this season – 13 fumbles and 11 interceptions – with the Hoosiers scoring 76 points off those takeaways.
Redshirt sophomore Peyton Ramsey went 16-for-28 for 243 yards and two touchdowns in the air. It is his sixth multi-TD passing game this season and sixth career three-TD game. With 27 career passing touchdowns, Ramsey moved into a ninth-place tie with Dave Schnell (1986-89) on the IU career passing touchdowns list. With 17 passing touchdowns on the season, Ramsey moved into a seventh-place tie with Antwaan Randle El (1999) and Ben Chappell (2009) for most passing touchdowns in a season.
Stevie Scott tallied 103 yards on 19 attempts (5.8 average) in the effort. It is his fourth 100 plus yard rushing day of the season, tying him with BenJarvus Green-Ellis (2003) for second-most as a true freshman in program history. Anthony Thompson holds the record with five (1996).
There are 10 freshmen listed on IU’s defensive depth chart for the Michigan game. And four sophomores. So that amounts to at least 14 Hoosier defenders in the regular rotation who have never played at The Big House – and 13 of them are from south of the Mason/Dixon line, from places not accustomed to snowy autumns.
Why Bet on Michigan?Michigan won its ninth straight last Saturday, 42-7 over Rutgers – the same score by which UM beat Penn State the week before. Shea Patterson threw three touchdown passes and Karan Higdon ran for two more scores.
Patterson was the story against a Rutgers defense that stacked the box in an attempt to thwart the Michigan run game amid blustery wind conditions. Thanks to solid pass protection, Patterson was impressive in his three-quarters of action, finishing 18-of-27 for 260 yards and three touchdowns. Michigan chalked up 453 yards of offense while its defense limited Rutgers to 252 yards, including just 59 through the air to mark the lowest total against U-M this season.
Patterson is 16th nationally in completion percentage (67%) and 14th in pass efficiency (160.3 rating). Higdon surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing mark (1,005) this season at Rutgers; has seven 100-yard rushing efforts, including six B1G games.
The Wolverines are fourth nationally in third downs (50.4%) and time of possession (34:35 avg.). U-M leads the NCAA in total defense, pass defense and pass efficiency. Michigan is third in the NCAA in fewest turnovers (7).
The Wolverines have been dominant against the Hoosiers at Michigan Stadium, winning the past 19 games at home. Michigan has compiled a 33-7 record all-time against Indiana at the Big House. The last home setback was a 27-20 loss during the 1967 season. Michigan is a perfect 23-0 against Indiana when ranked in the top 10 of the national polls.
