Nebraska Cornhuskers

The Cornhuskers (7-0 SU, 4-2-1 ATS) manhandled Purdue en route to a convincing 27-14 win last weekend despite never coming close to covering the spread as a whopping 24-point favorite. For the season, senior signal-caller Tommy Armstrong Jr. is completing an uninspiring 55.4 percent of his passes for 1,611 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. Armstrong has tossed at least one touchdown pass in each of his last four games. Wide receivers Alonzo Moore and Stanley Morgan Jr. have combined for 595 receiving yards and three touchdowns while running back Terrell Newby has rushed for a team-high 511 yards and four touchdowns. The Cornhuskers are averaging a healthy 34.4 points per game to rank 37th nationally in scoring. Defensively, Nebraska Cornhuskers is limiting the opposition to just 17.7 points per game to rank 14th nationally. Kieron Williams leads Nebraska with 47 tackles, Ross Dzuris has 4.5 sacks and Chris Jones has three interceptions.

Wisconsin Badgers

Wisconsin (5-2 SU, 6-1 ATS) snapped their two-game losing streak by getting past Iowa 17-9 in defensive battle last weekend while covering the spread as a 4-point favorite. The Badgers have recorded an impressive six wins over ranked teams since the start of the 2014 season. Young quarterback Alex Hornibrook is completing a modest 56.5 percent of his passes for 877 yards with five touchdowns, but he has also tossed six costly interceptions while getting limited to just two touchdown passes over his last three games. Receivers Jazz Peavy and Robert Wheelwright have combined for 693 receiving yards and three touchdowns while senior running back Corey Clement has rushed for a team-high 617 yards and six touchdowns. Wisconsin is averaging a modest 24.2 points per game to rank 96th nationally in scoring. Defensively, the Badgers are limiting their opponents to just 14.2 points per game to rank seventh in points allowed. Jack Cichy leads the Badgers with 60 tackles, T.J. Watt has seven sacks and Derrick Tindal has three interceptions.

Expert Pick and Prediction

While I’ve been really high on the Wisconsin Badgers since the start of the regular season and I like them to hold it down at home in this huge Week 9 Big Ten battle, there’s no way I can advise anyone to back the Badgers to cover  point spread that looks like it’s  few points too high. While Wisconsin had an elite defense that will almost assuredly force Nebraska into a tough afternoon in this matchup, the Badgers just aren’t very explosive offensively and have a young quarterback that, while clearly talented, is still finding his way as a starter. While the Badgers have gone 4-1 ATS in their last five home games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall, the Cornhuskers have gone 13-3 ATS in their last 16 road games and 5-2-1 ATS in their last eight games overall.  Despite going just 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings against the Badgers, I’m taking the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the points!

My Pick: Wisconsin 24 Nebraska 21
