For teams playing in the Power 5 conferences, there can be a very thin line between getting in and missing out. Your win-loss record, as well as a Conference Championship win, are taken into consideration, but the strength of schedule is also incredibly important. Last season was a perfect example of that, as the Alabama Crimson Tide found their way into the playoffs despite not winning their division or the conference. They got in at the expense of the Wisconsin Badgers, a team that had gone unbeaten in the regular season before falling at the final hurdle in the Big Ten Conference Championship Game. The playoff committee were not fans of the schedule that Wisconsin played in the regular season, but they probably would not have been able to keep them out of the playoffs had they also won the conference. The Badgers know what they need to do to get in this season and are already off to a winning start. They will host the New Mexico Lobos this week as a 35-point favorite, with the point total set at 58.

Why bet on the New Mexico Lobos?Despite winning their opening game of the season, the New Mexico Lobos have some issues to deal with heading into this one. At the top of the list is the 30-day suspension handed down to head coach Bob Davie who was accused of misconduct within the program. Perhaps the bigger issue here, though, is that despite their 62-30 win over Incarnate Word in Week 1, they still looked very wobbly on the defensive side of the football. The Lobos gave up over 560 yards to a team that they were favored to beat by 36 points, which makes the task at hand this weekend seem all the more difficult. New Mexico failed to cover the spread in Week 1, which now means that they have now gone 5 straight games without covering the spread.
Why bet on the Wisconsin Badgers? The Wisconsin Badgers have been a team that you can count on to cover the spread of late, even though they failed to do so in a 34-3 win over Western Kentucky in their season opener. The spread there was 36 points and failing to hit that mark represented only the second time in their last 7 games that the Badgers have failed to cover. Wisconsin will be happy to get home this weekend, as they are about as tough to beat there as it gets, winning 12 of their last 13 games in their own building. They don’t very often run up the score, though, with 4 of their last 6 games falling under the point total. Part of the reason for that, though, is that this is a defense that is very often dominant. The Badgers really don’t need to put up a lot of points to win, especially when going against lesser opponents, as they are in Week 2 of the season.
