Last SeasonThe Sooners won in Stillwater 62-52 last year. Baker Mayfield threw for 598 yards and five scores while running for a TD – of course, he’s now with the Cleveland Browns. Marquise Brown caught nine passes for a school-record 265 yards, and he had touchdown receptions of 84 and 77 yards for the Sooners. Oklahoma gained 785 total yards, tied for the fourth-most in school history and the Sooners’ second-best outing since 1988. OSU’s Mason Rudolph, now with the Steelers, passed for 448 yards and five touchdowns, but he had two critical turnovers in the second half.
Saturday will mark OU’s 113th all-time meeting against OSU, tying the 113 games against Texas for the Sooners’ most versus any program. Oklahoma’s 87 wins against Oklahoma State are it’s most against one opponent and the second most in FBS history against one program (Nebraska has 91 wins vs. Kansas).
Why Bet on Oklahoma State? The Pokes can only play spoiler and are off a 35-31 loss at Baylor as Charlie Brewer threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Denzel Mims with seven seconds left. The loss ended the possibility of a fourth-consecutive 10-win season for the Cowboys, but OSU is still just one win from becoming bowl eligible for a school-record 13th consecutive year. That streak is the 10th-longest active streak in the nation.
Baylor’s game-winning drive started after Oklahoma State (5-4, 2-4) was stopped on fourth down, when Chris Miller sacked Taylor Cornelius for a 9-yard loss with 1:31 left. Cornelius threw for 287 yards and a touchdown and ran for a score.
With 119 rushing yards, Justice Hill’s career total increased to 3,504 yards. With that total, he passed Tatum Bell (3,409 yards from 2000-03) for seventh-place in OSU history. With 122 receiving yards, Tylan Wallace surpassed the 1,000-yard mark on the season and put his total at 1,062 yards. Wallace is the ninth Cowboy to record a 1,000-yard receiving season. It marks the 16th total 1,000-yard receiving season in OSU history and OSU’s fourth straight year with a 1,000-yard receiver. He has had six 100-yard receiving games this season.
The Cowboys have made their living up front defensively this season, leading the nation with 3.67 sacks per game and ranking 11th nationally with 7.9 tackles for loss per game. Defensive end Jordan Brailford has been the biggest contributor, ranking fifth in FBS with 1.0 sacks per game and sixth in FBS with 1.7 tackles for loss per game.
This year’s Cowboys have a signature win over then-No. 6 Texas (Mike Gundy’s seventh win over an A.P. top-10 opponent as coach at OSU) and a second quality win over then-No. 17 Boise State.
Why Bet on Oklahoma?OU won at Texas Tech 51-46 last week. Kyler Murray recovered from those early picks by throwing for 360 yards and three touchdowns and running for 100 yards and another score to rally the Sooners. Murray became the first player in OU history to throw for at least 300 yards (360) and rush for at least 100 yards (100) in a game. He has surpassed 300 passing yards six times this season. In Big 12 play, Murray owns healthy statistical leads in total offense at 403.3 yards per game.
Murray leads the nation in passing efficiency rating (216.6) and yards per pass attempt (12.33). The redshirt junior ranks second nationally in yards per completion (17.46), total touchdowns (38) and points responsible for per game (25.3), third in passing touchdowns (31) and total offense (362.6), and fifth in completion percentage (.706). All of those figures lead the Big 12, as do his 2,689 passing yards, which rank seventh nationally.
Sophomore running back Trey Sermon is averaging 124.7 rushing yards over the last three games, a span during which he’s scored five touchdowns and averaged 7.3 yards per carry. He is coming off a career-high 206-yard rushing performance at Texas Tech (ran for a career-high three TDs). His 6.3 yards per carry are the most among Big 12 players this year with at least 100 rushes.
Oklahoma has won 30 of its last 32 games (.938) against Big 12 opponents dating back to the 2015 season. Its only two losses during that span came at the hands of Iowa State on Oct. 7 last year (38-31 in Norman) and Texas this season (48-45 in Dallas). Eighteen of those 30 victories have been by at least 15 points, and nine by at least 30 points. OU has won 14 straight November games (last loss on Nov. 8, 2014). Since the start of the 2000 season, the Sooners are 58-11 (.841) in the month.
