The Cowboys (3-1) were handed their first loss of the season by TCU last week, 44-31. The Frogs ran 52 times for 238 yards. TCU gave Rudolph plenty of time to throw, but he often couldn’t find enough open receivers. He completed 22 of 41 passes for 398 yards and two touchdowns, but he threw two interceptions. Washington caught six passes for 153 yards and a touchdown and Marcell Ateman caught six passes for 100 yards for the Cowboys. OSU continued to put up big offensive numbers in the game (499 yards of offense), but untimely penalties, TCU’s third-down offense and turnovers ultimately sealed the loss. Prior to that game, the Cowboys rolled through the three game non-conference portion of their schedule, winning by a combined score of 162-52. The Cowboys are outscoring their opponents in the first quarter, 66-6, this year, and have not allowed a first quarter point in five of their last six games. OSU is 11-1 in its last 12 games decided by less than 10 points. The Red Raiders (3-0) beat Houston 27-24 last week and play their first Big 12 game. Texas Tech forced five turnovers and ended Houston’s 16-game home winning streak. Nic Shimonek passed for 321 yards and two scores. Shimonek’s favorite target was Keke Coutee, who made 11 catches for 161 yards and a score, which came on a 77-yard pass in the third quarter. Houston owned the nation’s longest active home winning streak entering Saturday. The last home loss for Houston was Nov. 8, 2014, against Tulane, 31-24. The TTU offense has put up plenty of big numbers as well, ranking third nationally with 587.3 yards per game and holding the second-best passing offense in the nation at 437.7 yards per game. Shimonek leads the way for the offense as the only quarterback in the Big 12 averaging more passing yards per game than Rudolph. Shimonek’s top target is Coutee, who has 28 receptions for 446 yards and four touchdowns on the year. Justin Stockton became the first Red Raider this season to rush for over 100 yards as he finished with 102 yards on the ground off just 10 carries vs. Houston. He is the first Red Raider to rush for 100 yards in a game since Demarcus Felton against Louisiana Tech last season.
One important factor in Texas Tech’s 3-0 start this season has been its ability to protect the ball while also forcing turnovers on the opposite side. The Red Raiders head into this weekend ranked tied for fourth nationally with a plus-7 turnover margin. Tech currently ranks tied for 13th nationally with its nine turnovers gained. In addition, Tech has only allowed two turnovers this season via a fumble against Arizona State and a deflected interception at Houston.
