Last SeasonOregon stomped Utah 41-20 last year in Eugene even though the Ducks threw for just 69 yards. Oregon’s Tony Brooks James ran for 105 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Royce Freeman rushed for 139 yards but didn’t score. The Utes had just 3 yards rushing in the first half. Tyler Huntley threw for 293 yards and two touchdowns for the Utes. Former Oregon receiver Darren Carrington caught nine passes for 130 yards.
The Ducks also will be looking for their third straight win in Salt Lake City, where they are 9-5 all-time. Oregon has won eight of the last 10 meetings in the series to hold a 22-9 all-time lead.
Why Bet on Oregon? The Ducks stopped a two-game losing streak last week, 42-21 over a bad UCLA team. Justin Herbert and Dillon Mitchell returned to action after being in concussion protocol earlier in the week and led the Ducks offensively. Herbert finished 18-of-32 for 264 yards with two touchdowns, both to Mitchell, who caught eight passes for 156 yards and the two scores.
CJ Verdell, Cyrus Habibi-Likio and Tony Brooks-James added rushing touchdowns for the Ducks, who handed new Bruins coach and former Oregon coach Chip Kelly just his third loss ever at Autzen Stadium as a head coach. Only two of Kelly’s seven losses while UO coach from 2009-12 was in Autzen. Oregon finished with 200 rushing yards, surpassing the combined from two losses the previous two weeks.
The Ducks became bowl eligible for the 13th time in the last 14 seasons. They scored 40-plus points for the fourth time this season and have scored a TD in 30 of 36 quarters this season. Oregon is averaging 43.0 points per game at home this season and has scored a TD in 22 of 24 quarters. UO rushed for 200 yards and passed for 200 yards in the same game for the fourth time in 2018.
Mitchell is the first player in program history with six or more receptions in six consecutive games, Mitchell has 50 catches for 735 yards and five touchdowns while being targeted 83 times over that span. Mitchell leads the Pac-12 in receiving yards (833), receiving yards per game (92.6), receptions resulting in a first down (38) and 20-yard grabs (15). Herbert’s streak of 24 consecutive games with a TD pass is the longest in the nation. Oregon is tied for fourth in the FBS with 13 different players that have scored an offensive TD this season.
Why Bet on Utah? The Utes are tied for the Pac-12 South lead with USC and Arizona. However, Utah was pushed around last week in a 38-20 loss at Arizona State and lost starting QB Tyler Huntley to a season-ending broken collarbone.
The Utes struggled to get going on both offense and defense, accumulating just 325 yards on offense while giving up 536. With Arizona State averaging 15 yards per completion and 7.2 yards per play on offense, Utah struggled to get any momentum going during the game.
Huntley finished the game 7-for-15 passing for 88 yards and a touchdown along with 42 rushing yards before leaving the game in the third quarter. Jason Shelley was 4-for-11 passing for 59 yards. The Utes kicked a field goal to cap the drive during which Shelley entered the game, but was held scoreless from there as Arizona State scored the game’s final 17 points.
Zack Moss notched his sixth 100-yard rushing game of the season, racking up 128 yards on 18 carries, running in one touchdown. The junior passed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the second straight season, becoming just the fourth Ute to achieve two 1,000-yard rushing seasons in a career, giving him 1,092 on the season.
Over the previous month, Huntley had been playing the best football of his career. Coming into Saturday’s game against ASU, the Utes had scored 40-plus points in four straight games. He completed 150 of 234 passes with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions this season. Shelley, a redshirt freshman, takes over the starting job. Moving to No. 2 on the depth chart is sophomore Drew Lisk, a former walk-on awarded a scholarship in the summer.
At 6-3, Utah is bowl eligible for the 13th time under coach Kyle Whittingham. Whittingham has the best bowl winning percentage in NCAA history (92%) and his 11 bowl wins (11-1) is tied for second among active coaches.
