Why Bet on Savannah State?
I know about as much regarding Savannah State as you probably do. It’s a MEAC school in the FCS. It lost its season opener to UAB, 52-0. It was only SSU’s second Thursday night game since entering Division I in 2007. UAB scored on a 34-yard interception return and five running backs combined for 198 yards and four scores. The shutout marked the first for UAB since a 15-0 win over UCF on Nov. 29, 2008. The Tigers finished with just 178 yards and 12 first downs. They only crossed midfield twice. In the final quarter, the Tigers used nine players to drive from their own 25 to the UAB 42, the best drive of the game. Rashad Saxtons ran for 46 yards while Jaylen McCloud added 43, along with D’Vonn Gibbons who had 40. Gibbons completed one of nine passes for 23 yards, which was to D’Andre Snead. Defensively, John Wilson had an interception while Isaiah Bennett and Mulik Simmons both produced nine tackles. SSU head coach Erik Raeburn is known as a rebuilder. In his first head coaching job at Coe, he had back-to-back 6-4 seasons. In his third season, his team went 10-2 and made the Division III playoffs. At Wabash, he made the Division III playoffs his first two years. He went 8-2 in his third year, but bounced back to go 12-1 in his fourth season and earned another trip to the Division III playoffs. SSU went 3-7 in Raeburn’s first season with the Tigers and 3-8 a year ago. Senior defensive lineman Stefen Banks has been named to the Black College Hall of Fame 2018 Black College Player of the Year Watch List. Banks needs 27 tackles to reach 200 for his career.Why Bet on Miami?
The Canes were outclassed 33-17 in Houston by LSU to fall 14 spots in the new AP poll to No. 22. LSU led 27-3 by halftime after Jacob Phillips returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown. It was UM’s fourth loss in a row after starting last year at 10-0 and rising to No. 2 in the polls. Less than five minutes into the game, sophomore defensive back Trajan Bandy was ejected for targeting after a hit on LSU receiver Dee Anderson. The personal foul gave the Tigers a fresh set of downs from the Miami 20 and meant the Canes would be without a key starter for the majority of the game. Penalties crippled Miami in the opening half, as the Hurricanes were flagged eight times for 75 yards in the opening 30 minutes of play. Miami committed a defensive penalty on each of LSU’s four first-half scoring drives.
The Hurricanes totaled 342 yards of offense – 83 rushing yards and 259 passing yards – against LSU, outgaining the Tigers 342-296. Malik Rosier had a record-setting season last year with his 31 touchdowns (26 passing, five rushing) and 3,588 total yards, but had some of the same issues that plagued him late. Rosier was 15 of 35 for 259 yards with two interceptions against LSU. The Hurricanes were down 33-3 before his 3-yard TD keeper and 32-yard TD pass to Brian Hightower in the fourth quarter. In the losing streak to end last season, he had three total TDs (all passing) with five interceptions.
Miami totaled eight tackles for loss, two sacks and five pass breakups Sunday night. DB Jaquan Johnson led Miami with 11 tackles (three solo). DL Gerald Willis totaled a career-best eight tackles (four solo) and a career-high 4.0 tackles for loss, which included one solo sack. He was named ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week. It was Willis’ first game since 2016.
After being suspended for the Hurricanes’ opener, quarterback N’Kosi Perry was back on the practice field Tuesday, taking reps at the No. 2 spot behind Rosier, who remains Miami’s starting quarterback. Perry is likely to play at least some Saturday.
