Southern vs Alcorn State Last MeetingThese schools met at Alcorn State on Oct. 26 and the Braves won 27-13 in a rematch of the 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship game. Felix Harper threw for 277 yards and accounted for three touchdowns and Alcorn State scored 24 consecutive points in the second half.
Trailing 6-3 early in the third quarter, Harper scored on a 1-yard run for a 10-6 lead. Later in the second half, he threw four yards to De’Shawn Waller for a touchdown, Corey McCullough kicked a 31-yard field goal and Harper threw for another touchdown — 11 yards to LeCharles Pringle. The Jaguars were held to 209 yards of total offense.

More BackgroundSkelton completed 18-of-25 passes for 181 yards with those two scores and no interceptions. He was named the game’s MVP for the second year in a row. Both Touchdowns went to Hunter Register who led the Jaguars with seven catches for 75 yards.
Devon Benn added 66 yards off 11 carries. Running back Jarod Sims ran for 89 yards and two scores on just 17 carries for the Jaguars, including a 36-yard run that proved to be the go-ahead score with 14:11 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Southern defense held its ground in the second half led by senior linebacker Calvin Lunkins with 11 tackles and two QB hurries, Caleb Carter and Montavius Gaines finished the night with nine stops each.
Southern has won seven of its last eight games. Southern last won the SWAC title in 2013, beating Jackson State 34-27 and also lost to Alcorn, 38-24, in 2014 in addition to last year.

Alcorn finished the season as the top defensive team in the SWAC for the regular season, passing Southern as the top defense against the rush. The Braves allowed 19.3 points per game, the only team with a sub 20-point average. Southern was third (24.9) behind Grambling State (22.4). Alcorn allowed only 328.5 yards per game, tops in the league.
The Braves went a perfect 4-0 against the SWAC East Division. They are 18-2 against the division over the last five seasons. After four regular seasons, Fred McNair carries a 22-8 SWAC record. The Braves are now 20-0 when leading at halftime since 2017. The Braves are looking to go undefeated at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium for the fifth time in school history, and the first time since 2002.
