Why Bet On Stanford at +3?

The Cardinal are looking good in this Week 2 matchup because they have the better defense and head coach and a more experienced signal-caller under center. Stanford didn’t look like a national championship contender in Week 1, but the Cardinal did manage to subdue Northwestern in their 17-7 season-opening win last weekend. Quarterback K.J. Costello completed 16 of 20 passes for 152 yards and one touchdown before leaving the game due to injury. Backup,  Davis Mills passed for 81 yards in relief while running back Cameron Scarlett rushed for a team-high 97 rushing yards. Defensively, Jordan Fox recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown and the Cardinal recorded three sacks and a pair of interceptions in the win.

Why Bet On USC at -3?

The Trojans look like a solid pick to get the upset because they are playing at home and quite literally, desperate, even at this early juncture of the season. The bad news is that. The Trojans have lost starting quarterback JT Daniels for the season after he tore two ligaments in his knee after leading USC to a 31-23 win over Fresno State in their regular season opener last weekend.

Freshman signal-caller Kedon Slovis completed 6 of 8 passes for 57 yards while tossing one interception and no TD passes in relief. Running back Vavae Malepeai had 134 rushing yards and a touchdown on 23 carries while fellow back Stephen Carr added 56 rushing yards and a touchdown on six carries. Defensively, Isaiah Pola-Mao had one sack and one interception while the Trojans had three sacks overall.

Expert Analysis and Prediction for Stanford vs USC

Stanford shut down USC en route to a commanding 17-3 home win last season to snap a two-game losing streak and now I like Stanford to get it done again. The Cardinal have gone 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 road games while USC has gone 2-7 ATS in their last 9 home games, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 conference games and 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games in September.

I’m fully and completely expecting Stanford head coach David Shaw to confuse young USC quarterback Kedon Slovis with myriad defensive schemes the young signal-caller just hasn’t seen at this stage of his young career. The Cardinal are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings against USC and 7-2 ATS in their last 9 road dates against the Trojans while the favorite in this Pac-12 rivalry has gone 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings. I have no idea why USC is favored in this contest, but I believe Stanford is the easy pick to win and cash in!

Pick: Stanford +3
