Neither Tennessee nor Auburn has any shot at playing for the SEC title, but the No. 21 Tigers still can reach a pretty good bowl game if they finish the season strong. They are more than two-touchdown favorites on the NCAAF Odds against the struggling Vols.

All-Time Series

Tennessee-Auburn ranks among the best SEC football rivalries sacrificed by expansion from 10 to 12 to 14 teams. Being in opposite divisions and not crossover rivals, these schools don’t play too often. Annual adversaries from 1956-91, the Vols and Tigers have met only nine times since. Two of those were SEC championship games. The series has featured Heisman winners (Pat Sullivan and Bo Jackson of Auburn) and runners-up (Johnny Majors, Heath Shuler and Peyton Manning of Tennessee) and some thrilling upsets.

Saturday will be the first game between the two teams since 2013 when Auburn won in Knoxville. Auburn leads the all-time series, 28-21-3, and has won six straight in the series. The game marks the Vols’ first trip to Auburn since 2008.

Why Bet on Tennessee?

The Vols are winless in the SEC and enter off back-to-back blowouts to Florida and on Sept. 29 at No. 2 Georgia. UT did score two second-half TD to pull within 12 points of the Dawgs but would fall 38-12. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Jarrett Guarantano paced the Vols offensively, completing 13 of 21 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore running back Ty Chandler caught four passes for 53 yards and a touchdown in addition to rushing five times for 27 yards.

Defensively, Daniel Bituli led Tennessee with eight tackles. Kyle Phillips and Alexis Johnson Jr. each made seven stops. Redshirt junior outside linebacker Darrell Taylor totaled three sacks and forcing two fumbles. The Vols started a pair of true freshmen cornerbacks – Alontae Taylor and Bryce Thompson – versus the national championship runner-up.

Tennessee first-year coach Jeremy Pruitt was proud of the way his team fought at Georgia to make it interesting for a while. “I learned we’ve got a fight in us,” Pruitt said. “… that we’re not going to quit. It kind of gets me excited. I’m proud of them and the way they fought. Our guys kept fighting which means we’re headed in the right direction and that excites me.”

.

Pruitt has faced Auburn every year of his coaching career and has a 6-2 record since becoming an assistant coach in 2010, including a 4-1 record as a defensive coordinator

There are quite a few connections between the two coaching staffs this weekend. Tennessee has two assistants that played for the Tigers in defensive line coach Tracy Rocker (1985-88) and special teams coordinator/safeties coach Charles Kelly (1986-89), while Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele is a 1979 UT graduate and a former assistant coach for the Vols.

Tennessee freshman safety Trevon Flowers will miss the rest of the season after breaking his collarbone during practice last week during the bye. Flowers has undergone surgery. He appeared in the first five games and had nine tackles total.

Why Bet on Auburn?

The Tigers can forget about winning the SEC West with two losses already and still having to visit Alabama. Then again, they were in a similar position last year at 5-2 and won five consecutive games to close out the regular season.

Auburn was upset last Saturday at Mississippi State 23-9 to fall from No. 9 in the polls. Mississippi State came into the game among the nation’s top 10 in scoring defense, and the Bulldogs dominated on that side of the ball once again. The Tigers hit on a couple big plays but settled for three field goals. It was Auburn’s first true road game of the year.

At the end of the first half, Auburn safeties Jeremiah Dinson and Daniel Thomas converged at the goal-line to stop Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald on fourth-and-goal. While the Tigers celebrated what they thought was a goal-line stand, an official signaled for a touchdown, giving State a 13-3 lead.

Tennessee vs Auburn is one of the best games in NCAA Football Week 7.

“Obviously, an extremely tough loss,” Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. “Any time you go on the road in this league and you play a good opponent, you can’t do the things that we did.”

Quarterback Jarrett Stidham went 19 of 38 for 214 yards with no interceptions. His favorite target was senior wide Ryan Davis, who caught a game-high eight passes for 91 yards. He’s now fourth among Auburn career receiving leaders with 137 career receptions, passing Tyrone Goodson (136 from 1993-97). Davis ranks 19th in Auburn career receiving yardage (1,261), passing Greg Taylor (1,217 from 1987-90) and Thomas Bailey (1,243 from 1991-94). Stidham to Davis is the second most productive pass tandem in Auburn history, with 113 completions; the Auburn record is 140 completions by Pat Sullivan to Terry Beasley (1969-71).

The Auburn defense was led by safety Dinson, who had a career night with 15 tackles and also pulled down an interception for the second straight game. He’s the first player since Joshua Holsey in 2016 to record interceptions in back-to-back games, and his 15 tackles are the most by an Auburn player since Daren Bates (16) against Ole Miss in 2012.
