Texas vs Texas Tech NCAA Football Week 11 Odds & Prediction

Written by on November 9, 2018

If No. 19 Texas wins out, it will most likely play in the Big 12 title game. A loss Saturday at rival Texas Tech, though, would all but end the Longhorns’ chances. They opened as slight dogs at Mybookie Sportsbook for this matchup but are now slight favorites.

Last Season

Texas Tech was a 27-23 upset winner at Texas to close the 2017 regular season. That got the Red Raiders bowl eligible. QB Nic Shimonek had been benched for McLane Carter but came in with the Red Raiders trailing 23-13. His first drive included a 51-yard completion and his short touchdown pass to T.J. Vasher cut it to 23-20. The game winner, a 16-yard pass to Cameron Batson, came with 2:07 to play. The touchdown was set up by a 52-yard interception return to the Texas 14 by Justus Parker. Sam Ehlinger passed for 239 yards and a touchdown for UT. The Longhorns ran for just 18 yards and had deep drives end in field goals of 19 and 20 yards by Josh Rowland instead of touchdowns.

Texas Tech and Texas will be meeting for the 68th time in history and the 59th-consecutive year Saturday. The Longhorns control a 50-17 all-time advantage in the series, which includes a 20-10 advantage in games played in Lubbock.

Why Bet on Texas?

The Horns lost a huge home game vs. West Virginia last week, 42-41. WVU connected on a 33-yard touchdown pass and successful two-point conversion with 16 seconds remaining. The next drive for the Longhorns started at their own 41 after the kickoff, but an incompletion and a fumble near midfield on a last-second play closed out a West Virginia win.

Sam Ehlinger was 25-of-36 for 356 yards and three touchdowns. The three passing touchdowns were a new career high. He became the 10th QB in school history to surpass 4,000 career passing yards. Now has 4,088 yards and is now 10th all-time in career passing yards. Ehlinger now has 27 career touchdown passes, which is now ninth-most in school history. He also surpassed 2,000 yards on the season (2,173) in nine games, tied for the fifth-fastest to reach that mark in a season in school history.

Ehlinger has attempted a school-record 246 straight passes without throwing an interception. Ehlinger’s last interception came on his final pass attempt in the season opener at Maryland. West Virginia’s Geno Smith owns the Big 12 record with 273 consecutive pass attempts without an interception.

Lil’Jordan Humphrey had nine receptions for 143 yards and a touchdown. The 143 yards were a career high and his nine catches matched his career best. Devin Duvernay caught six passes for a career-high 100 yards and a touchdown. Humphrey and Duvernay became the first pair of receivers to have 100 receiving yards since Mike Davis and Jaxon Shipley did it in 2013 against BYU.

The Longhorns’ offense has registered nine straight games with at least 200 yards passing and 100 yards rushing. The only time in the last 20 seasons that a UT team has had a longer such streak was when the 2016 team produced 10 straight games of more than 200 yards through the air and 100 yards on the ground.

Why Bet on Texas Tech?

TTU nearly upset Oklahoma last week but lost 51-46. The Red Raiders led 31-28 at halftime, but freshman quarterback Alan Bowman didn’t return in the second half of their eighth straight loss against a Top 10 team going back to 2012. Texas Tech punted three straight times without getting a first down after Jett Duffey replaced Bowman, who was 21 of 26 for 227 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Bowman was released from the hospital on Wednesday afternoon after suffering a partially collapsed lung last week. Bowman’s stay in the hospital marked his second this season. The freshman suffered a partially collapsed lung after taking a hit in their game against West Virginia on Sept. 29. He missed one game before returning to the starting lineup. Bowman has racked up 2,638 yards on 227 completions and thrown 17 touchdowns in eight games so far this season. Bowman isn’t expected to play here, so it will be Duffey.

Texas vs Texas Tech is going to be a close one.

Texas Tech continues to rank among the nation’s offensive leaders as the Red Raiders are second in passing offense (375.6 yards per game) and ninth in both scoring (42.7 points per game) and total offense (522.1 yards per game). Tech is also second nationally with 256 first downs.

The Red Raiders have won two of the past three meetings against their in-state rival as Texas Tech secured a 48-45 victory in 2015 and a 27-23 win a year ago. Tech had not previously won back-to-back games in Austin in school history. Texas Tech will be looking for its first win over Texas at home since the thrilling 39-33 victory in 2008. Kliff Kingsbury is 2-3 during his tenure against Texas. He needs one more win to rank second all-time among Tech head coaches for wins over Texas, trailing only Spike Dykes (6).

A victory over Texas would mark Texas Tech’s second win over a ranked opponent this season. The Red Raiders had not previously notched multiple wins over top-25 foes in a season since Kingsbury’s debut in 2013.
