With the ‘real’ start of the 2016 college football season set to get underway this coming weekend, let’s rock and roll with the following college football predictions!
Top Teaser Picks For College Football Week 1
LSU Tigers at Wisconsin Badgers (+9.5)Where: Lambeau Field, Green Bay WI
When: Sat, Sep 3, 2016 at 3:30 PM ET
NCAAF Odds: LSU -10
LSU has a ton of elite talent and one of the best running backs in all of college football. However, the LSU Tigers (9-3 SU, 6-6 ATS) ranked 39th in total offense in 2015 (437.9 ypg) and 44th in scoring (32.8 ppg), making the Wisconsin Badgers (10-3 SU, 6-7 ATS) the easy pick to cash in as a teaser selection.
The Badgers return an identical seven starters on both sides of the ball in 2016 and unless I see a different Brandon Harris from the one I saw under center for LSU last season, I just can’t put much faith in the Tigers.
Wisconsin won 10 games in Paul Chryst’s first season and they’ll have gifted running back Corey Clement back for his senior season in what could be a Heisman Trophy contending campaign. Wisconsin has won eight of their last 10 home games and suffered their only two home losses during that stretch by just six and four points respectively.
Give the Badgers six points for the easy ATS cover, although I think they’ll win outright anyway!
The Pick: Wisconsin 28 LSU 24
Army West Point Black Knights at Temple OwlsWhen: Friday, September 2, 2016
Where: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PA
Time: 7:00 PM ET
NCAAF Odds: Temple -17
Army West Point (2-10 SU, 5-7 ATS) may have altered its name a year ago, but the Black Knights were a complete mess in head coach Jeff Monken’s second season. Army used three quarterbacks a year ago, none of whom were very impressive. The Temple Owls (10-4 SU, 9-5 ATS) are the easy teaser pick in this Week 1 affair mostly because they’re superior to the Black Knights in all three phases of the game! Temple averaged a respectable 29.7 points per game in 2015 (60th) while allowing just 20.0 points per game defensively to finish a stellar 17th nationally.
The Owls have seven returning starters on offense, including quarterback P.J. Walker and gifted running back Jahad Thomas, a player that rushed for 1,262 yards and 17 touchdowns a year ago. Temple is 10-5 ATS in its last 15 games and a bankroll-boosting 5-1 ATS in its last six home games while Army has posted an uninspiring 1-6 ATS mark in its last seven games overall and a winless 0-5 ATS mark in its last five games against the Owls. Tease the Owls down to an 11-point favorite for the easy ATS cover.
My Pick: Temple 35 Army 17
Notre Dame at TexasWhen: Sunday, September 4 at 7:30 PM ET
Where: Royal Texas Memorial Stadium, Austin, TX
NCAAF Odds: Notre Dame -4
The Longhorns (5-7 SU, 5-7 ATS) enter a must-win season under Charlie Strong, but they still have plenty of questions they need to answer on both sides of the ball. Texas will have a new coordinator in Art Briles disciple Sterlin Gilbert and a new starting quarterback in strong-armed freshman Shane Buechele, but I believe the Longhorns will be no match for a much deeper Notre Dame team that has legitimate College Football Playoff hopes.
The Irish (10-3 SU, 8-5 ATS) finished the 2015 season ranked inside the top 35 in almost every significant offensive category including total yards (466.7 ypg, 26th) and scoring (34.2 ppg, 34th). Head coach Brian Kelly has two gifted quarterbacks in DeShone Kizer and Malik Zaire that he has already said will both play in this contest.
The Irish pounded the hell out of the Longhorns in their commanding 38-3 home win last season and are the easy college football odds pick to get the road win in this opener after going 6-4 ATS as a favorite a year ago and taking on a mediocre Texas team that went 3-5 ATS as an underdog.
My Pick: Notre Dame 31 Texas 24
