Are the Mountaineers a safe bet in the Heart of Dallas Bowl?

Week 13 College Football Odds: West Virginia At Iowa State

Written by on November 24, 2016

College football is one of the cruelest sports in the world. In the space of a single week, you can go from being in the playoff hunt to being out of the chance to win anything. That is what happened to the West Virginia Mountaineers last weekend, as they were blown out on home field, effectively killing their shot at a final 4 spot. To make matters worse, it also killed any chance they had of winning the Big 12 Conference, as the two teams that they lost to this season – Oklahoma and Oklahoma State – are now going to be battling it out for the top spot. All of that aside, it has been a better than expected season for the Mountaineers, and they have a couple of games left to leave a very positive mark on the year. It all begins this weekend with a trip to Ames to take on the Iowa State Cyclones. The bookies like West Virginia in this one, and have them in as a 7-point betting odds favorite.

Why bet on the West Virginia Mountaineers

Last Saturday night in Morgantown opened with a ton of excitement and promise, but before the opening quarter was even in the books, West Virginia had fallen behind in a big way against Oklahoma. This was a game that was essentially over by half-time, and while the Mountaineers showed some fight in the second, they still came up well short in a 56-28 loss. The air was totally sucked out of the stadium, and you have to wonder if the result had the same effect on the team. Are they going to be able to bounce back this weekend? The West Virginia Mountaineers are 4-5 ATS this season, and are 2-1 ATS as a road favorite.

Why bet on the Iowa State Cyclones

The Cyclones are a team that got off to a dreadful start this season, but who are starting to show some real signs of improvement in the final few weeks of the season. They are coming into this one on a 2-game winning streak, and while that is not exactly something to get overly excited about given their 3-8 overall record, it is a sign that they are not necessarily going to be a pushover this weekend. The win/loss record of this team is not all we should be looking at, as they have played some very good teams tough. They are 7-4 ATS, and more importantly, are 5-1 ATS at home. They are not about to roll over and die in this one.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

Looking at the schedule this weekend, this was one game that jumped out as a potential upset alert. I am not quite ready to take the Cyclones straight up, but I do think that they can keep it close enough to cover.
