The first major Kentucky Derby prep race of the year happens on Saturday when Smile Happy leads a 3-year-old contingent in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes at the Fair Grounds. 

Major Derby prep races pick up big time in March starting with the Grade 1 Fountain of Youth on March 5, followed by the Tampa Bay Derby on March 12, and the Louisiana Derby on March 26.

This year, the Florida Derby and Arkansas Derby are both on April 2. Seven days later, 3-year-olds race in the Bluegrass, the Wood Memorial, and the Santa Anita Derby on April 9.

The Kentucky Derby is on May 5 this year followed by the Preakness Stakes on May 21, and the Belmont Stakes on June 11.
