49ers vs Texans 2018 NFL Preseason Week 2 Odds & Prediction

Written by on August 15, 2018

We have all learned that you take the preseason results with a grain of salt. After all, let’s not forget that the Cleveland Browns tore through the preseason last year, winning all 4 games before failing to win one when it really mattered. While the results are not that important to anyone but those of us who wager on these games, the preseason can still give you a good idea of what we might see in the regular season. This is especially true for teams that are coming into the new year with some buzz or hype surrounding, which is the case for both the San Francisco 49ers and the Houston Texans. For San Francisco, the big story is all about Jimmy Garoppolo, who won 5 straight games at the end of last season after moving over from the New England Patriots. It’s also all about the QB in Houston, as Deshaun Watson looked to be the real deal in his rookie season before going down with an injury. These two teams will go as their QB does, and both teams are off to a winning start in the preseason.

Why bet on the San Francisco 49ers?

While it is Jimmy G that is getting all the attention ahead of the new season, he had little to do with the 49ers 24-21 Week 1 win over the Dallas Cowboys. He was only in for a single series, going 3/6 for 34 yards. It was rookie QB Nick Mullens who got most of the glory in this one, with the young man going 11/13 for 141 yards and a TD strike. He also had an INT in among those stats, but overall you have to say that it was a solid first outing for the rookie. With the three QB’s combined, the 49ers delivered over 350 yards of passing offense, but they also used the ground game to decent effect, with Raheem Mostert putting in a good shift with 57 yards on 8 carries, although he did turn the ball over on a fumble. Much of the scoring for the 49ers came in the 4th quarter of this one when the bench guys were all in.

Why bet on the Houston Texans?

As expected, we did not get to see much of Deshaun Watson here, as he will be used sparingly as he returns from a bad injury. He did, though, complete the only pass attempt the made. The real plaudits for the 17-10 win over the Chiefs in Week 1 need to go to QB Brandon Weeden, as the former Browns man went 9/11 for 97 yards and 2 TD strikes. 49ers vs Texans is scheduled for Saturday Night at NRG Stadium. The Texans ground game was on point, too, racking up over 100 yards on 25 carries. The Texans defense was particularly stout against the run, holding the Chiefs to about 70 yards on 23 carries. They also got an INT off of Chad Henne, with second-year guy Zach Cunningham getting the pick.

Expert Pick and Score Prediction

Perhaps the most concerning thing for the 49ers is that they gave up most of their points in Week 1 when many of the starters were still on the field, and they also scored with their deep bench guys in the 4th quarter. I like the Texans to get their second win of the preseason at home. Score: San Francisco 49ers 17 – Houston Texans 24
