Last Meeting

Clubs met on Oct. 7 in San Francisco and Arizona pulled off the 28-18 upset. Josh Rosen threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to fellow rookie Christian Kirk on Arizona’s first play from scrimmage and the Cardinals used five takeaways to give the first-year coach Steve Wilks his first career win – and still only one.

The Cardinals averaged just 3 yards per play after the opening snap, with their only other scores coming on Josh Bynes’ fumble return for a TD and David Johnson TD runs on two short drives after turnovers by the 49ers. The Niners had the decided edge in yardage (447-220), first downs (33-10) and offensive plays (92-49) but they lost three fumbles and threw two picks.

Why Bet on San Francisco?

The Niners (1-6) lost at home to the Rams 39-10 last week. No shock there. C.J. Beathard completed 15-of-27 passes for 170 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Beathard had a rough first half, turning the ball over twice including a lost fumble and failing to complete a pass to a receiver. He did find George Kittle for several big plays, however, including a 10-yard touchdown with just 10 seconds left.

Matt Breida rushed five times for 15 yards but aggravated his ankle injury during the game. As of Wednesday, Breida hadn’t practiced this week. If Breida sits, Raheem Mostert would be the primary ball-carrier over Alfred Morris. Mostert rushed seven times for 59 yards and hauled in all four of his targets for 19 yards in the 49ers’ loss to the Rams.

49ers LB Reuben Foster exited Week 7 against the Rams with a right shoulder injury. He suffered the injury trying to stop Todd Gurley from getting into the end zone in the fourth quarter. Not yet clear if the talented but injury-prone Foster will play Sunday. Safety Adrian Colbert was carted off the field with a right leg injury, and he has landed on injured reserve. Not a huge loss considering Colbert is Pro Football Focus’ worst cover safety out of 89 qualifiers.

Cornerback Richard Sherman (calf) remained sidelined at Wednesday’s practice. Sherman sat out after being a game-time decision Sunday against the Rams. With Jimmie Ward (hamstring) also banged up, San Francisco’s secondary is really thin.

Why Bet on Arizona?

The Cards were embarrassed 45-10 on their own field last Thursday by a bad Denver team. Denver returned two interceptions for first-quarter touchdowns and the Broncos snapped a four-game losing streak. Rookie QB Josh Rosen threw three interceptions overall and fumbled the ball away twice on a rough night that began badly for him and never got better. He limped off the field after he was sacked for the sixth time, on a fourth-and-16 play near the end of the game. Rosen finished completing 21-of-39 passes for 194 yards and one TD along with those five turnovers. Rosen will be fine to play this week as he practiced Wednesday.

David Johnson continued his struggles, rushing 14 times for 39 yards. It’s like the Cardinals don’t know how to use him. Wait, apparently the front office agreed because Mike McCoy was fired the next day as offensive coordinator and replaced by QBs coach Byron Leftwich.

49ers vs Cardinals is the worst game of NFL Week 8.

The Cardinals are averaging only 13.1 points a game – 31st in the league – and are last in the league in total yards a game, third-down conversion percentage, time of possession and rushing yards. They are 31st in passing yards. They have yet to have more than 269 yards of offense in a game.

Leftwich was a coaching intern in the 2016 season in which Johnson exploded with more than 2,000 yards from scrimmage rushing and receiving. The priorities for Leftwich according to Coach Steve Wilks are to get Rosen in better positions to succeed and getting Johnson back into a starring role both in the running and passing games. Leftwich needs to revert to parts of the Cardinals’ 2016 offense when Johnson often lined up as a receiver, sometimes wide. Do that, send him in motion, keep him on the move.

Leftwich is a holdover from Bruce Arians’ staff and is regarded as a young coach with a bright future. Leftwich, 38, played quarterback 10 years in the NFL, but this is just his third year coaching. His play-calling experience as a coach is limited to a few preseason games in 2017.

There’s talk this week that the Cards might trade top cornerback Patrick Peterson, who did request a deal with this team rebuilding. Peterson carries cap hits of $14.9 million, $11.8 million, and $13.1 million the next three years, including this season. Several contenders have called Arizona.
