Bengals vs Browns Last Meeting

The Browns swept last year for the first time since 2002. The most recent meeting was Week 16 in Cleveland, a 26-18 Browns victory. Baker Mayfield threw three touchdown passes and Nick Chubb ran for 112 yards. Cincinnati made it interesting as Jeff Driskel threw two TD passes in a two-minute stretch to get the Bengals close. However, Mayfield connected with tight end David Njoku for 66 yards just before the two-minute warning and the Browns ran out the clock.

Why Bet on Cincinnati?

The Bengals got their first win Sunday, upsetting the Jets 22-6. Before Sunday, the Bengals were the only winless team in the NFL and at risk of becoming the third team in league history to go 0-16. The Bengals had dropped 13 consecutive games dating to last season, which was also a team record.

New York’s offense struggled against a Cincinnati defense that ranked near the bottom of the league in several statistical categories, including total defense. The Jets were held to 271 yards.

Coach Zac Taylor opted to bench rookie Ryan Finley and reinserted Andy Dalton as the starting QB. Dalton completed 22-of-37 passes for 243 yards and a touchdown. Dalton’s longest pass went for 19 yards and he lost two touchdowns to drops from his tight ends. Dalton put Cincinnati ahead to stay with a 17-yard pass to Tyler Boyd that made him the Bengals’ career leader in touchdown passes, moving ahead of Ken Anderson with 198. He also passed Anderson for the franchise’s career completion mark.

Joe Mixon rushed 19 times for 44 yards and a touchdown, adding four receptions for 26 additional yards. Boyd caught 5-of-10 targets for 59 yards and that touchdown. No. 1 WR A.J. Green missed his 12th game recovering from ankle surgery. He’s clearly not playing this year.

Some Help

However, another wideout, John Ross, has been activated off injured reserve. Ross, the seventh overall pick in the 2017 draft, required a minimum absence of eight weeks when put on IR after suffering an injured sternoclavicular joint in the Bengals’ Week 4 loss to Pittsburgh.

Before the injury, Ross was in the midst of his best start to an NFL campaign. In four games, he caught 16 passes for 328 yards and three touchdowns. He had totaled 210 receiving yards in his previous 16 games with the Bengals. The Bengals are 23rd in the NFL with 12 completions of 20 or more air yards; Ross had two of those completions in Cincinnati’s season opener at Seattle.

Why Bet on Cleveland?

The Browns had their three-game winning streak and probably their playoff hopes end in a 20-13 loss in Pittsburgh on Sunday. It was Cleveland’s 16th straight road loss in the series. The Browns were outplayed over the final three quarters by a Steelers team riddled with injury and inexperience at the offensive skill positions. Cleveland likely now needs to win out and get some help to reach the playoffs.

Cleveland took an early 10-0 lead but sputtered the rest of the way. Baker Mayfield completed 18 of 32 passes for 196 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and played the second half with his right (throwing) hand in a protective glove after smacking it against the face mask of Pittsburgh linebacker Bud Dupree. Mayfield began the game 10-of-12 from under center but, following the big hit, finished the game 8-of-20 — including game-ending interception behind Jarvis Landry.

Browns coach Freddie Kitchens said Mayfield “should be fine” for Week 14. It’s been a down year for Mayfield, who ranks third to Jameis Winston (20) and Philip Rivers (15) in interceptions with 14. Kitchens has struggled to find a way to protect Mayfield, who has been sacked 32 times this season.

Rushing & Defense

Nick Chubb handled 16 carries for 58 yards, adding a 21-yard catch in the loss. Kareem Hunt rushed seven times for 46 yards, hauling in all five of his targets for 19 yards and a touchdown. Odell Beckham caught 3-of-6 targets for 29 yards. The prized offseason acquisition has now gone six straight games without eclipsing 100 receiving yards for the first time in his career. What a disappointment the splashiest trade of the NFL offseason has turned out to be. Landry caught 6-of-11 targets for a team-high 76 yards.

Kitchens said cornerback Greedy Williams (concussion) is in the league’s protocol. Williams unexpectedly walked off the field and into the locker room under his own power after mysteriously banging his shoulder into one of Cleveland’s wideouts mid-fourth quarter vs. Pittsburgh. The team is confident the rookie will be cleared by Sunday.
