After every NFL week, rumors swirl about players and coaches. NFL Week 2 is no different. Even though were in a pandemic inflicted season, coaches that have yet to get their teams going are in danger of losing their jobs. The three coaches on the hottest seats are the Jets’ Adam Gase, the Lions’ Matt Patricia, and Atlanta Falcons HC Dan Quinn. Let’s have a quick look at the recent rumors so you can make your bets against their NFL odds.
NFL Rumors – 4 Coaches Could Be Doomed Before Week 8
Why will New York Jets HC Adam Gase be the first fired?
Gase already knows it’s over. After the New York Jets 13-31 second week loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Gase said, “This s – – – is no fun. Going out there and getting you’re a – – beat.” When coaches revert to expletives during post-game press conferences, they know the party is over.
Gase should be fired. Even Adam knows. Not only did the Niners drub the Jets, but they did so with Jimmy Garoppolo, Raheem Mostert, and Nick Bosa on the bench in the second half. All three important San Francisco players suffered injuries.
The Jets head coach couldn’t get his team to beat a team with three important starters on the opposing side injured. That’s a sign that Gase is done in New York.
Will Arthur Blank fire Dan Quinn before Week 8?
Dan Quinn’s situation is vastly different than Adam Gase’s. The Falcons are 0-2 after an incredible Dallas Cowboys comeback on Sunday. The Boys came back from a 39-30 deficit at the 4:59 mark in the fourth quarter, and a 29-10 deficit at halftime, to win. Dallas also recovered an onside kick, which is close to improbable in today’s NFL.
Atlanta scored 39 points in the loss. The Falcons scored 25 points in the 25-38 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1. On the plus side, owner Arthur Blank might be thinking, “Hey, our offense is great! So, Dan’s got something with which to build.” On the negative side, though, Blank hired Quinn because he is, supposedly, a defensive genius. Dirk Koetter is the offensive coordinator.
Why not fire Quinn, hire Koetter as head coach, and then roll with Raheem Morris as defensive coordinator or fire Morris as well and have Koetter promote someone? Either scenario could happen, which means Blank could get rid of Quinn before NFL Week 8 or wait until after Week 8.
How much longer will Lions’ brass stick with Matt Patricia?
Patricia’s situation is similar to Dan Quinn’s. The Lions hired the former New England Patriots defensive coordinator because they wanted someone who could create a unit that stopped, or at least contained, quarterbacks like Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers.
On Sunday, Rodgers threw for 240 yards and 2 touchdowns. Not bad. But Detroit allowed the Packers to rush for 259 yards. That’s down right pathetic. Nobody would blame the Lions for parting ways with their current head coach.
Matt Patricia, though, runs complicated defensive schemes. When players don’t make mistakes, things work out well. The real question is how long the Lions wish to wait for Patricia’s players on defense to catch up to his schemes.
As we’ve seen, that could take a while. So, like Quinn and Gase, Matt Patricia’s seat is as hot as lit coals at a barbecue in the desert.
