Broncos at Redskins Week 16 Odds & NFL Betting Pick

Written by on December 22, 2017

Many of the NFL games in Week 16 involve at least one team still competing for a playoff spot or seeding. I’d like to tell you that Sunday’s game between the Broncos and Redskins in Maryland means something, but it doesn’t. The Skins are just over a field-goal NFL betting favorite.

Last Meeting

In Week 8 of the 2013 season, Denver beat visiting Washington 45-21 – that Broncos team was terrific and went to the Super Bowl, losing to Seattle. The Broncos overcame a two-touchdown deficit to score the last 38 points vs. Washington. Peyton Manning threw for 354 yards and four touchdowns and the Denver defense came up with five turnovers. Robert Griffin III was the Washington QB that day – now he’s working at Baskin Robbins or something.

Why Bet on Denver?

Denver has followed an eight-game losing streak with back-to-back wins. It was 25-13 last Thursday at Indianapolis. Brock Osweiler relieved an injured Trevor Siemian, who is done for the year, and completed 12 of 17 for 194 yards and two scores in one of the best games of his career. The Broncos’ win over the Colts in Week 15 was notable because it was the first time all year that they won a game on the road. In seven road games, the Broncos have gone 1-6 both straight-up and ATS, with that ATS mark being the worst in the NFL this year (Yes, even worse than the Browns). Denver is also 4-9-1 ATS overall on the season, which is the third worst mark in the NFL this year. The Broncos also haven’t won in Washington since 1998. One would think Osweiler should start his week with Siemian out, right? Not exactly. As of this writing, Coach Vance Joseph hasn’t decided yet between Osweiler and 2016 first-round pick Paxton Lynch. Joseph won’t decide until Friday. Joseph and GM John Elway have said repeatedly they want to see what Lynch can do before the offseason hits and they have to make a decision for the team’s future at quarterback. This week, Lynch returned to practice for the first time since injuring his left ankle in his only start and action of the season Oct. 26 against the Oakland Raiders. Lynch finished just 9-of-14 passing for 41 yards with an interception when he suffered the ankle injury in the third quarter and left the game having played 33 snaps. Osweiler had started three games earlier this season when he was moved to the bench so the Broncos could start Lynch against the Raiders.

Why Bet on Washington?

Washington will attempt to even their all-time record with the Broncos, including postseason play, at 7-7. The Redskins are 5-7 against the Broncos in regular season play but earned a victory in the teams’ only postseason meeting, a 42-10 win in Super Bowl XXII. The Redskins will host the Broncos for the first time since earning a 27-17 victory against Denver at FedEx Field on Nov. 15, 2009. The contest will be the second game of the Redskins’ only set of back-to-back home games in 2017. The two-game homestand in Weeks 15-16 will mark the latest the Redskins have had their first set of back-to-back home games in a season since the NFL adopted the 16-game schedule in 1978. Could this be the final home game for Redskins QB Kirk Cousins? He could become a free agent this offseason unless the Redskins franchise tag him again – that would cost Washington more than $34 million in salary in 2018. You know which team would pursue Cousins? The Broncos. Are the Redskins a safe betting pick against the Broncos? Redskins tackle Trent Williams said he likely won’t play again this season, barring an emergency situation. He said if the Redskins’ line emerges healthy after Sunday’s game, then there’s a good chance he’ll undergo surgery the following week to repair the patella tendon in his right knee. Despite the knee issues, Williams played well enough to be named a starter in the Pro Bowl. Williams was among a number of Redskins who dealt with injuries this season. They have 18 players on injured reserve, including 12 players who would be considered starters or key backups. There could be another. Rookie starting RB Samaje Perine left Thursday’s practice with a groin injury. Coach Jay Gruden said it’s only a minor injury but admitted he isn’t sure of Perine’s status for Sunday’s game. No team has had worse injury luck at running back than the Redskins, who have already lost Rob Kelley (ankle, knee), Chris Thompson (leg) and Byron Marshall (hamstring) to IR. Kapri Bibbs and LeShun Daniels would fill in if Perine is unavailable.
