Chargers at Chiefs NFL Week 15 Odds & Pick for Thursday Night

Written by on December 11, 2018

It’s the last Thursday night game of the season in Week 15 and it’s awesomely fitting that it’s also the most important TNF matchup of the year: Los Angeles Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs. Kansas City would clinch the AFC West and all but clinch the top spot in the AFC playoffs with a win. The Chargers would have a shot at the division and the top seed with a win as well but are field-goal Mybookie Sportsbook underdogs.

First Meeting

Kansas City won its ninth straight vs. the Chargers in Week 1, 38-28. Tyreek Hill had a 91-yard punt return for a score and a 58-yard TD reception during the first quarter to give Kansas City a 14-3 lead. He then added a 1-yard reception on a shovel pass for a score in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Hill also had 169 yards on seven receptions, which is the second-most yards by a Chiefs receiver in an opener. Patrick Mahomes was 15 of 27 for 256 yards and four scores. Philip Rivers threw for 424 yards in a loss. The Chargers hugely outgained the Chiefs but turned it over twice.

The nine-game winning streak is the Chiefs’ longest-ever against the Chargers. Rivers has just a 66.2 passer rating against Kansas City in that stretch while posting a 92.9 mark against the league overall in that span.

Why Bet on LA Chargers?

The Bolts avoided a big upset Sunday with a 26-21 win over Cincinnati. Philip Rivers completed 19-of-29 passes for 220 yards and one touchdown. Rivers threw a 14-yard touchdown to Keenan Allen on the Bolts’ opening drive, but the Cincinnati defense toughened up after that and kept this game competitive. It was the first time this year Rivers didn’t throw for at least two TDs. Keenan Allen caught 5-of-9 targets for 78 yards and one touchdown.

Austin Ekeler rushed 15 times for 66 yards and one touchdown, adding two catches for 28 yards on five targets. Last week, rookie Justin Jackson vastly outplayed Ekeler in the thrilling win over the Steelers, but coach Anthony Lynn went right back to Ekeler in this one, giving him the start. However, Ekeler suffered a stinger late in the game and could miss this week.

It’s possible that Pro Bowl running back Melvin Gordon returns, though. Gordon didn’t practice at all last week, but the Chargers have been targeting Week 15 for his return. Gordon’s MCL sprain was on the mild side. He has missed the past two. Gordon’s snaps may be limited if he returns against the Chiefs. Anthony Lynn said Gordon’s improved with two weeks off due to a sprained right knee. However, the Chargers will not have a full practice this week to evaluate where he is at with the injury.

The Chargers could win the division for the first time since 2009 with a defeat of the Chiefs, along with Kansas City losing one of their two remaining games (on the road against the Seattle Seahawks or at home against the Oakland Raiders) while winning out. The Chargers can also clinch a playoff berth with a win over the Chiefs, which would be the franchise’s first since 2013, ending the Bolts’ longest playoff drought since missing eight straight postseasons from 1996 to 2003.

Why Bet on Kansas City?

The Chiefs won a thrilling 27-24 OT game vs. Baltimore on Sunday. Patrick Mahomes completed 35 of 53 passes (66.0 percent) for 377 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for a 91.5 passer rating. Mahomes leads the NFL with 4,300 passing yards and 43 touchdown passes this season. Mahomes joined Hall of Famers Dan Marino (1984) and Kurt Warner (1999) as the only first-or-second year quarterbacks in league annals with at least 4,000 passing yards and 40 touchdown passes in a single season.

Tight end Travis Kelce had seven catches for 77 yards and one touchdown in the victory. Kelce has 86 catches and 1,159 receiving yards this season and is the first tight end in league annals with at least 80 receptions and 1,000 receiving yards in three consecutive seasons.

Chargers at Chiefs is the last Thursday Night game of the 2018 season.

Tyreek Hill caught 8-of-14 targets for 139 yards. Hill hobbled off the field with what looked like a wrist injury in the first quarter and then had to go to the locker room early in the second quarter with an ankle issue. He came out after the break limping all over the place but had a key 48-yard grab on 4th-and-9 to set up the game-tying touchdown with 53 seconds left. Coach Andy Reid said Monday he expects Hill (heel) to play Thursday night against the Chargers.

Defensive end Chris recorded a sack in the win and has at least one sack in each of the Chiefs’ past nine games. Jones is the first player to record a sack in at least nine consecutive games in a single season since the individual sack became an official statistic in 1982. He is the sixth player since 1982 to record at least one sack in nine consecutive games at any point in time.

Star safety Eric Berry (heel) is expected to make his season debut against the Chargers. He was expected to suit up Sunday against Baltimore, but instead, the Chiefs gave him another week. His return will provide a huge boost to a Chiefs secondary that has struggled throughout the year. Berry hasn’t played in an NFL game since last year’s season opener at Foxboro.
