NFL Week 4 Preview & Betting Odds: Saints vs. Dolphins at London

Why Bet On Philadelphia?

The Eagles won in very unlikely fashion last week as rookie kicker Jake Elliott hit a franchise-record 61-yard field goal as time expired to beat the Giants 27-24.  Wentz tossed a 19-yard pass to Alshon Jeffery to set up Elliott’s kick, the longest game-winner in NFL history for a rookie and a franchise record. Elliott was a fifth-round pick by the Bengals and joined the Eagles after Caleb Sturgis was injured in Week 1. Elliott missed from 52 yards earlier in the game and in Week 3 missed from 30 yards and shanked an extra point. Wentz was wired for sound during the game and prior to Elliott’s attempt, Wentz told teammate Kamu Grugier-Hill that he would give Elliott his game check if the rookie somehow made it. Wentz takes home $31,765 a week. Will he pay it? The win was costly as running back Darren Sproles tore an ACL and broke an arm on the same play, and his season is over. Sproles, a three-time Pro Bowler, rushed for 61 yards this season on 15 carries. He also had seven receptions for 73 yards. He was also a good returner. Two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Fletcher Cox (calf) and starting linebacker Jordan Hicks (ankle) also were injured against the Giants. Coach Doug Pederson says both players are day to day. A statistic worth noting is the offense’s touchdown efficiency in the red zone. The Eagles have scored touchdowns on 66.7 percent of their trips inside opposing 20-yard lines, including a 3-for-3 outing against New York. They scored on their only trip inside Washington’s 20 and were 2-of-5 in Kansas City. The Eagles rank 10th in the league in that category. Last season, the Eagles converted 49.1 percent of their trips into the red zone. The Eagles haven’t played in Los Angeles since 1990, losing to the Rams, 27-21.

Why Bet On LA Chargers?

The Bolts could have easily won their first two games but last week’s 24-10 loss to Kansas City was never in doubt. Philip Rivers was picked off three times. It was the ninth time Rivers threw three interceptions. He led the NFL in pickoffs twice in the last three seasons, including last year when he had a career-high 21. Rivers almost was picked off twice more. The future Hall of Famer put the week’s loss squarely on his shoulders after posting the fourth-worst passer rating of his career. The offensive line gave Rivers plenty of time; he was simply off his game.  Overall, Rivers is 73-of-112 (65.2%) for 760 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions for an 81.7 passer rating.  His top target is Keenan Allen, whose 19 catches are tied for ninth-most in the league. Are the Chargers a safe NLF betting pick in Week 4? Look for L.A. to feed Melvin Gordon on a consistent basis. The running back missed most of the second half with a sore knee against the Chiefs, but was off to a strong start after rushing for 55 yards in the first quarter. The Pro Bowler has found the end zone in each game this season. Defensively, Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa have been terrific. Ingram ranks second in the NFL with 5.5 sacks, which is more than halfway to his career-high for a single season of 10.5 set in 2015, while Bosa has 2.5.  Linebacker Jatavis Brown leads the NFL with 36 tackles. The Chargers rank 18th in total offense (315.3 yards per game), 11th in passing (244.7 ypg), 27th in rushing (70.7 ypg) and 26th in points (16.0). Defensively, the Bolts rank 13th in total defense (322.7 ypg), fifth in passing (176.0 ypg), 31st in rushing (146.7 ypg) and 18th in points allowed (22.3).
