NFL cancels August 6 Hall-of-Fame Game

The biggest news of the week? Well, it’s where Cam will strap on the helmet. But before getting to that, the NFL decided to cancel the August 6 NFL Hall-of-Fame Game.

Although most of us had a feeling that might happen, we still held out hope that the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers would step onto the field at Canton, Ohio. But it wasn’t to be.

The NFL canceling the HOF Game brings us to a more important point. Yes, the National Football League continues to do things as normal. Yes, training camps should open in late July and, yes, the season remains on track to begin on September 10.

We must consider the possibility that there’s no preseason this year, though. Teams are forbidden from practicing together. A couple of weeks ago the NFL released a memo that said franchises must tell them how they plan on mitigating Covid-19’s spread.

There are a lot of things yet to be decided. Those things could end up being decided during preseason.

Sounds bad, but it’s not. If the NFL must take the entire preseason to hash out details for the regular season, they should do it. It’s the only way to ensure the league starts on time.

Patriots sign former Panther Cam Newton

Cam Newton, the 2015 NFL MVP, signed a contract for $1 million to play for the New England Patriots. Under the contract, Cam could make up to $7.5 million in incentives.

That’s not a bad deal for Newton. There’s a real chance he can start for the Patriots. Although some peers, like Richard Sherman at San Francisco, believe Cam should have gotten more, only New England seemed ready to give the former Carolina Panther a shot.

Newton used to dominate defenses, but outside of his MVP season, when he had 35, Newton has never thrown for more than 24 touchdowns. He’s injury-prone and doesn’t take care of the football.

Cam has thrown interceptions in the double-digits every year he’s played in the NFL except for 2019 when he played in 2 games.

Newton’s lifetime best completion percentage is 67.94%, which happened in 2018. It was just the second time in his career that he’s completed over 60% of his passes.

No doubt, though, Josh McDaniel has the best offensive mind of any coordinator Cam has ever worked with. McDaniel has turned lifetime backups like Matt Cassel into borderline star quarterbacks.

And, Cam has a great work ethic. So, we must make him the favorite to beat out Jarrett Stidham for the QB1 job in New England.

Brady and Bucs working together, Super Bowl odds drop

Tampa Bay now offers the third lowest odds to win the 2021 Super Bowl. The Bucs are at +850, which is exactly where the San Francisco 49ers are.

Kansas City is at +600 while Baltimore is a +650 choice.

What gives? How can the Buccaneers offer lower Super Bowl odds than the New Orleans Saints to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy?

Terrific Tom and Gronk. Both are in Tampa. Not only that, but Brady and Gronkowski are working out with their new Tampa Bay teammates.

While other teams have forbidden their players from working out together, Brady, Gronk, and the rest are hanging out at a high school and throwing around the pigskin.

Florida is now a U.S. coronavirus hotspot. But that hasn’t dissuaded the two GOATs from playing catch.

That’s one of the reasons Tampa is such a low-priced favorite. The Bucs have a decent defense. Brady, Gronk and the rest are getting ready for the season. That could give them an advantage.

Have a great week!
