Eagles Are a Safe Betting Pick vs. Cardinals in Week 5’s NFL Odds

Written by on October 5, 2017

The Arizona Cardinals are rather lucky to be 2-2 as their two wins are in overtime against two of the worst teams in the NFL: San Francisco and Indianapolis. The Eagles, meanwhile, are 3-1 and in sole possession of first place in the NFC East. They are also nearly TD NFL odds favorites for this matchup.

David Johnson ran for 187 yards and three touchdowns, and Carson Palmer threw a TD pass as the Cards clinched the NFC West; they would reach the NFC title game that year. Johnson is currently out injured. Sam Bradford threw for 361 yards and two TDs, including a 78-yard score to Jordan Matthews. Neither plays for the Eagles these days.

How to Bet Carolina at Detroit Week 5 NFL Spread & Game Info

Why Bet On Arizona?

Arizona beat San Francisco 18-15 in overtime last week but it was costly. Palmer threw 19 yards to Fitzgerald with 32 seconds left in overtime for the contest’s only touchdown. Fitzgerald had three catches for 13 yards before the winning grab as the 49ers made him the emphasis of their defense, except on the last play. Palmer completed 33 of 51 for 357 yards and was intercepted in the end zone on a tipped pass on the game’s opening series. Palmer was sacked six times, four in the fourth quarter, by a 49ers team that had three sacks total in the first three games. In Bruce Arians’ offense, the Cardinals like to take shots down the field. In 2016, Palmer’s “average intended air yards,” or the average distance he threw down the field was 10.2 yards per attempt. That was the fifth-longest distance per throw in the NFL. In 2017, his average throw once again lands 10.2 yards down the field. The costly loss was a season-ending injury suffered by outside linebacker Markus Golden. Arizona has a few options to replace Golden, who’s developed into a feared pass-rusher. He had 12.5 sacks last season, but had yet to record one through four games this season. The team could replace him with Haason Reddick. Arizona’s first-round pick this year played defensive end during his senior year at Temple and converted to inside linebacker at the Senior Bowl in January. Meanwhile, left tackle D.J. Humphries re-injured his knee in practice last week. It’s why Humphries missed his third straight game Sunday after he seemed to have a shot at returning. Humphries might return this week. The Cardinals’ offensive line is in shambles as Palmer has taken a league-worst 17 sacks.

Why Bet On Philadelphia?

The Philadelphia Eagles escaped the winless Chargers in L.A. last week, 26-24. Carson Wentz passed for 242 yards, LeGarrette Blount rushed for 136 and rookie Jake Elliott kicked four field goals. Blount had 109 rush yards after contact, which is the fifth-most by a player in a game over the last five seasons. He’s rolling downhill now following a slow start with 203 yards on 28 carries (7.25 avg.) over the last two games. Tight end Zach Ertz led the team with five catches for 81 yards Sunday, and currently ranks fifth in the NFL in receiving yards (326). He leads all tight ends in receptions (26), yards and targets (36). His connection with Wentz got off to a slow start but began to click in as the 2016 season went along. Ertz has 95 receptions for more than 1,000 yards and 5 TDs over his last 16 games. Are the Eagles a safe NFL odds pick against the Cardinals in Week 5? The Eagles have given up five pass plays of 40+ yards this season, which is tied for most in the NFL, so the Cardinals’ speed at receiver has to be viewed as a significant concern. In seven career games against the Eagles, Fitzgerald has 41 receptions for 693 yards (16.9 YPC) and 8 TDs. A key part of the Eagles’ success this season has been their ability to shut down opposing running games. On the season, they have allowed 70.8 rushing yards per game, which is second in the NFL. Arizona ranks last in the NFL in rushing.
