Nick Foles led the Philadelphia Eagles to the franchise’s first Super Bowl victory a couple of years ago. This offseason, he signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Foles should play a bit against his former club on Thursday in Week 2 of the preseason. The Jags are home favorites on the NFL odds.

Why Bet on Philadelphia?
The Eagles lost their preseason opener 27-10 at home to the Tennessee Titans last Thursday. We probably would have seen plenty of backup quarterback Nate Sudfield in this game as we did against the Titans, but Sudfeld was forced from the preseason opener with a left wrist injury. Sudfeld’s non-throwing arm bent awkwardly as he was bracing himself for a fall. Cody Kessler is the Eagles’ No. 3. Sudfeld had completed 10-of-18 passes for 177 yards and a score before going down. Turns out he suffered a broken wrist, but at least it wasn’t on his throwing hand. Still, he will miss around six weeks. Kessler should play most of the snaps this Thursday behind starter Carson Wentz. Philly’s other QB on the roster is Clayton Thorson.
“I feel great,” Sudfeld said. “Surgery went great (Friday). I’m really thankful for the service and that they did such a good job and that they got me in so fast. As far as a timetable, I’m trying to get back as soon as I can, but I’ve never broken a bone before so I’m trying to listen to the doctors and hopefully be back really soon.”
Kessler struggled in the preseason opener, going 3 of 6 for 12 yards and a 56.2 passer rating, raising even more questions about whether the Eagles should pursue another veteran quarterback option to compete with him for the No. 2 job. The Eagles signed Kessler in May because he had starting quarterback experience with the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars and could provide veteran competition for Sudfeld for the backup quarterback job.
Pro Bowl offensive Lane Johnson is expected to miss the remainder of the preseason with a knee injury. The same goes for Dallas Goedert, who bowed out with a calf injury in the Eagles’ preseason opener against Tennessee. The Eagles remain confident that Johnson will be all systems go for Week 1 against the Redskins. Halapoulivaati Vaitai and Jordan Mailata have been working at right tackle in his absence.
Philly also made a move Sunday, signing cornerback Sojourn Shelton. To make room on the 90-man roster, the Eagles waived/injured wide receiver Shelton Gibson. The 5-9, 177-pound Shelton originally joined the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Arizona Cardinals in 2017 out of Wisconsin. After the preseason, Shelton was released by the Cardinals and signed to the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad. After the season, he was re-signed to a futures deal by the Bengals but was later released during the preseason. The 24-year-old started what then a school-record 51 games in his collegiate career and tied the Badgers’ all-time mark with 54 games played. An All-Big Ten first-team selection by the media in 2016 as a senior, he set career highs with four interceptions and 12 pass breakups.

Why Bet on Jacksonville?
The Jaguars opened the preseason with a 29-0 loss in Baltimore. The Jags played without quarterback Nick Foles, the 2018 Super Bowl MVP who was signed as a free agent in March. Foles was one of 32 players who were either injured or rested by coach Doug Marrone in the preseason opener, which came after the teams held two joint practices earlier in the week.
Just two days after saying he wasn’t sure if Cam Robinson would be able to play in the season opener, Marrone said the team’s starting left tackle was being activated from the physically unable to perform list on Monday. Robinson was injured during the Jaguars’ Week 2 victory over New England last season. He began training camp on PUP, along with receiver Marqise Lee (knee). Linebacker Jake Ryan (knee) is on the non-football injury list. There is no change in status for Lee or Ryan. Neither may be ready for Week 1.
Linebacker Najee Goode made the top defensive play of Sunday’s practice when intercepted a Foles pass in goal-line work. On a timing route, receiver Keelan Cole ran his route too deep and didn’t turn around to look for the ball. Goode read the play perfectly to pick the pass off. He is filling in for rookie weak-side linebacker Quincy Williams, who suffered a meniscus tear in his knee and is out four to six weeks.
The Jaguars also released running back Benny Cunningham via an injury settlement. Cunningham, who the team signed as a free agent in March has been dealing with a hamstring injury. The move also means the first three running backs on the depth chart are set. Leonard Fournette will remain the team’s starter with Alfred Blue as his primary backup.
Blue was also signed in free agency after spending his first five seasons on his career with the Houston Texans. He was the running back at LSU prior to Fournette’s arrival in Baton Rouge. Rookie Ryquell Armstead will be the third back in the rotation and continues to garner praise from the coaching staff for his efforts from Thursday in the preseason opener.
