The Arizona Cardinals are rebuilding under rookie quarterback Kyler Murray and first-year head coach Kliff Kingsbury, so not a huge shock the Cards have just one win. However, the Atlanta Falcons were supposed to be NFC contenders this season and also have just the one. The teams face off in the desert on Sunday with the Falcons as slight NFL betting favorites.

Last Falcons vs Cardinals Meeting
Last year, Atlanta beat visiting Arizona 40-14. Julio Jones made an acrobatic touchdown catch on a pass from Matt Ryan, and Deion Jones returned an interception for an early score. Julio Jones caught six passes for 82 yards, all in the first half.
His 22-yard score in the closing seconds before intermission put the Falcons up 26-7. The Falcons forced three turnovers and sacked Arizona quarterbacks seven times. Arizona’s Josh Rosen was under duress all afternoon and finished with a 38.4 passer rating.

Why Bet on Atlanta?
The Falcons lost their third straight last Sunday 53-32 in Houston despite Matt Ryan throwing for 330 yards and three touchdowns – he’s second in the NFL in passing yards and has joined legends Kurt Warner (six games in 2000) Steve Young (six games in 1998) and Peyton Manning (five games in 2009 and 2013) as the only players with at least 300 passing yards in each of their team’s first five games of a season in NFL history. Arizona’s pass defense isn’t very good so we expect Ryan to throw for another 300-plus yards.
Atlanta’s defense has been horrible this year and surrendered 592 yards of total offense to the Texans and did not sack Deshaun Watson. The Falcons gave up the third-most points of the season to the Texans (53), right behind the Dolphins (59 to Ravens) and Rams (55 to Bucs). Last time the Falcons allowed that many points in a game was 2004, a 56-10 loss to the Chiefs.
The offense might have to score 35-plus points per game if the Falcons hope to win. “We’re disappointed across the board,” said Falcons coach Dan Quinn, who also is the team’s defensive coordinator. “One hundred percent gut-check time for us.”
Quinn’s Defense
Through four games, Quinn’s 1-4 Falcons have allowed 30.4 points per game, second-most in the league behind the winless Miami Dolphins (40.8 ppg.). The Falcons rank 30th on third-down defense, allowing opponents to convert 56.5% of the time. They rank 30th in first downs allowed per game at 23.6. And they have allowed 24 plays of 20-plus yards this season, tied for the fifth-most in the NFL.
Some believe that Quinn could be close to being fired, but owner Arthur Blank says he’s not considering that yet: “Obviously, the coaching is not where it needs to be. They’re challenging themselves, questioning themselves, examining everything they know how to examine. That’s all they can do is work really hard at it, take this as seriously as they can, and feel the pain.
This week, the team placed safety Falcons placed S Johnathan Cyprien on injured reserve. The Falcons did not disclose Cyprien’s injury. He missed all of 2018 with a torn ACL. Acquired from the Eagles nine days ago, Cyprien played 24 snaps in his Week 5 debut for the Falcons.

Why Bet on Arizona?
The Cardinals got their first win in a 26-23 upset at Cincinnati last week. Kyler Murray threw a key late 24-yard pass and also scrambled 24 yards to get Arizona in position for its long-awaited win Sunday. Zane Gonzalez completed the drive win a 31-yard field goal on the final play for the Cardinals’ first win under coach Kliff Kingsbury. Murray completed 20-of-32 passes for 253 yards and had 10 rushes for 93 additional yards and a touchdown. Kingsbury, who designed a game plan that was more run heavy for Sunday, is fine with Murray rushing for nearly 100 yards if it leads to a win.“He’s getting comfortable,” Kingsbury said. “The NFL is a different game. It moves fast and you can tell it’s slowing down a little bit for him. We’re going to have our ups and downs along the way, but you can definitely see a comfort level in his play that wasn’t there a few weeks ago and hopefully that continues.”
Larry Fitzgerald caught 6-of-8 targets for 58 yards in the win, a bit of a disappointing effort on an afternoon where both fellow WRs Christian Kirk and Damiere Byrd were inactive. Both Kirk (ankle) and Byrd (hamstring) returned to practice after sitting out Week 5. It’s the first time Byrd’s practiced the past two weeks, a good sign for his pending availability against the Falcons.
Kingsbury said David Johnson (back) will be monitored all week. Kingsbury would not rule out that Johnson could miss Sunday’s matchup. Johnson’s back reportedly “locked up” throughout the Cardinals’ win Sunday. The injury wasn’t a major deterrent as Johnson saw his usual snaps while logging a season-high 156 yards from scrimmage.
