Giants vs Redskins NFL Week 14 Odds & Betting Prediction

Written by on December 5, 2018

The Washington Commanders still are in the mix in the NFC East race, but a loss Sunday at home to the Giants will all but end Washington’s playoff hopes. New York is simply playing out the string but has looked better in winning three of four. The Skins are slight NFL Betting favorites.

First Meeting

In Week 8, the Skins won 20-13 at the Giants. Safety D.J. Swearinger intercepted two passes, and Matt Ioannidis had 2 1/2 sacks as the Washington defense dominated. The Redskins sacked a battered Eli Manning seven times, forced the two turnovers, limited Saquon Barkley to 38 yards rushing. Adrian Peterson caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Alex Smith and ran for a season-high 149 yards, with the last 64 coming on a touchdown jaunt with 3:06 to play.

Dustin Hopkins added field goals of 53 and 39 yards for the Redskins. Smith is now out for the season. Aldrick Rosas kicked field goals of 37 and 21 yards for the Giants. Manning, 30 of 47 for 316 yards, hit Evan Engram on a 2-yard touchdown pass with 17 seconds to play.

Why Bet on NY Giants?

The Giants won for the third time in four games Sunday, upsetting the Bears 30-27 in OT. Rookie Saquon Barkley rushed for 125 yards and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. threw a 49-yard touchdown pass and had a touchdown catch.

Beckham, who also threw a 57-yard touchdown pass and had a 33-yard touchdown catch against Carolina in Week 5, is the first player since 1924 to record multiple games with a touchdown pass and a receiving touchdown in a single season. Eddie Kaw and Benny Boynton of the 1924 Buffalo Bisons are the only players to previously accomplish the feat.

Beckham, who leads the Giants with 1,052 receiving yards in 2018, is the only player in league history with at least 1,000 receiving yards and multiple touchdown passes in a single season. Barkley has 954 rushing yards this season and surpassed Hall of Famer Tuffy Leemans (830 rushing yards in 1936) for the most rushing yards by a rookie in franchise history.

Eli Manning completed 19-of-35 passes for 170 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the win. Giants coach Pat Shurmur said Manning will start Week 14. This was the likely outcome after the Giants pulled an overtime upset of the Bears. Manning did not play well in that game, however, and it continues to make sense for the Giants to see what they have in fourth-rounder Kyle Lauletta. Shurmur left the door open Monday for fourth-round rookie QB Kyle Lauletta to see late-season playing time, though.

Giants SS Landon Collins will miss Week 14 with a shoulder injury and is week to week. It will be just the second missed game of the contract-year safety’s career. With only a month left to go, it’s possible Collins is forced to injured reserve. He’s one of the team’s best defenders.

Why Bet on Washington?

The Redskins not only lost 28-13 at Philadelphia on Monday but lost their second quarterback of the year to a broken leg. It was Alex Smith a few weeks ago, and then backup Colt McCoy vs. the Eagles. That means the 6-6 Redskins must try to stay in the playoff race with Mark Sanchez, who was signed on Nov. 19 and replaced McCoy on Monday. The Redskins now have a 23.8 percent chance to make the playoffs.

The Redskins believed McCoy could still lead an effective offense because of his experience: He was in his fifth year of Coach Jay Gruden’s system. His teammates liked him for his leadership. Sanchez threw one pick and completed 13-of-21 passes for 100 yards in McCoy’s place. The Skins will need to sign a backup for him.

Giants vs Redskins is going to be a close one.

Running back Adrian Peterson, who ran 90 yards for one touchdown, only finished with 98 yards on nine carries. The 90-yarder was the longest run of his career and the longest rushing touchdown in Washington’s history. Peterson, 33, became the oldest player with a 90-yard touchdown run in NFL history. The scoring run also tied him with Jim Brown for fifth place on the all-time list with 106 rushing touchdowns.

After defeating the Giants, 20-10, at FedExField a year ago, the Redskins will be seeking home victories against the Giants in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2011-12. The first victory in Washington Redskins franchise history was secured in a home contest against the New York Giants when the then-Boston Braves defeated the Giants, 14-6, at Braves Field on Oct. 9, 1932.   The game will conclude a stretch of three consecutive NFC East contests for the Redskins. It will represent the first time the Redskins have faced divisional opponents in three consecutive weeks since the final three games of the 2014 season.
