Jaguars Are Slim NFL Lines Favorites for Week 10 Against Chargers

Written by on November 9, 2017

Although these teams are about as far apart as possible on separate coasts, they might as well be division rivals. This game will mark the fifth straight year that the Chargers and Jags have played each other and the seventh time in eight years. The Jacksonville Jaguars are favored on the NFL lines this time, though.

Last Season

Since 2010, the Chargers have gone 6-0 both straight up and ATS against the Jags, which includes a game last season where the Chargers covered as a three-point favorite in a 38-14 win. In that one, Bolts QB Philip Rivers matched his career high with four touchdown passes, including two to Travis Benjamin, and Melvin Gordon ran for one score. Casey Hayward led the Chargers’ defense with two interceptions of Blake Bortles. The Jags crossed midfield only six times and committed three turnovers.

Why Bet On LA Chargers?

Rivers (3,984) and Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (3,972) enter Week 10 ranked ninth and 10th, respectively, on the NFL’s all-time completions list. This week, Rivers and Roethlisberger can become the eighth and ninth players in NFL history to record at least 4,000 career completions. Rivers looks to continue his recent string of success against Jacksonville as number 17 boasts a 6-1 lifetime record against the Jaguars. In the six wins, he sports a 120.3 passer rating while recording 19 touchdowns and 2,119 yards. In his last three outings against Jacksonville, Rivers has tossed 11 touchdowns with no picks, including back-to-back four-touchdown performances. The L.A. Chargers comes off its bye week. The Bolts’ defensive coordinator is Gus Bradley, who was formerly Jacksonville’s head coach. The 51-year old took a patient approach to rebuilding the Jags, amassing a 14-48 record over that span while accumulating young talent. However, the Jaguars decided to make a change late last year, dismissing Bradley with two games remaining in the 2016 campaign. Bradley’s defense is playing very well at the moment. In the last two games, they blanked the Denver Broncos and then held the New England Patriots’ top-ranked offense to only one touchdown. Overall, the Bolts rank fourth in sacks (26), seventh in points against (19.0) and eighth against the pass (201.9 ypg). The team also features two players tied for fifth in the NFL and second in the AFC with 8.5 sacks in Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa. Chris McCain has five sacks. That defense could get better this week as the team activated middle linebacker Denzel Perryman (ankle) from injured reserve. Sidelined since the preseason opener, Perryman is fully expected to make his 2017 debut against the Jaguars. He will try to shore up the Chargers’ No. 31 (by yardage) run defense. The Chargers rank 17th in total offense (332.8 yards per game), 13th in passing (253.5 ypg), 25th in rushing (88.5 ypg) and 22nd in points (18.8).   Defensively, the Bolts rank 18th in total defense (337.0 ypg), eighth in passing (201.9 ypg), 29th in rushing (135.1 ypg) and seventh in points allowed (19.0).

Why Bet On Jacksonville?

The Jags are one of the surprise teams in the NFL, combining a ferocious pass rush and opportunistic secondary with a punishing ground attack that has led them to a 5-3 record.  The only trio to boast more sacks than the Chargers is the Jags’ dominant threesome of Calais Campbell (11.0), Yannick Ngakoue (6.5) and Dante Fowler Jr., (5.5) with 23. Rookie running back Leonard Fournette leads the league’s No. 1 rushing attack as he’s amassed 596 yards on 130 carries (4.6 ypc) and six touchdowns.  He’s also effective as a receiver, catching 15 passes for 136 yards and another score. Fournette was suspended last week but will start Sunday.  At quarterback, Blake Bortles has completed 139 of 234 passes (59.4-percent) for 1,657 yards and 10 TDs for an 86.4 rating. Are the Jaguars a safe bet in Week 10? Jaguars coach Doug Marrone says he hasn’t decided if rookie WR Dede Westbrook (core muscle surgery) will be activated this week. Westbrook is healthy, but Jacksonville wants him to get more scheme acclimated before activating him. That could happen this week depending on how he practices. The Jaguars rank ninth in total offense (364.7 ypg), 29th in passing (207.1 ypg), first in rushing (166.5 ypg) and eighth in points (25.8). Jacksonville ranks third in total defense (281.2 ypg), first in passing (156.4 ypg), 27th in rushing (124.9 ypg) and first in points allowed (14.6).
