Lions at Packers NFL Week 17 Betting Lines & Analysis

Written by on December 27, 2018

While there are going to be several teams engaging in playoff battles on the final weekend of the NFL season, there are going to be several more who will simply be playing out the string. For the players involved in those games, it may prove to be their final game in their current team colors, as missing the playoffs very often means that changes are set to come in the offseason. For some, it will be as simple as looking ahead to the draft to strengthen the current squad, while other teams will be looking at blowing things up.   The Green Bay Packers are already in the process of making big changes, as the search is now on for a coach to replace Mike McCarthy, who was fired a couple of weeks ago. They will close out their season against another team who will be making some moves this offseason, the Detroit Lions. It’s a game that is meaningless in terms of the playoff picture, but we could be looking at some players playing for a job next season. The Packers are in as a 7 ½ point favorite, with the point total set at 44 ½.

Why bet on the Detroit Lions?

The Detroit Lions are going out of this season with a whimper, winning just once in their last 5 games overall. The biggest problem for the Lions has been their inability to create any type of meaningful offense, which is what tends to happen when you have a very good QB but no weapons for him to work with.   Detroit basically admitted that they were giving up on the season and looking ahead to next year when they traded away WR Golden Tate for draft picks. The end result is a team that is averaging less than 20 PPG on offense and who have failed to reach the 20-point mark in 5 straight games. The Lions are 5-5 ATS as the underdog this season, which includes going 3-2 ATS as a road dog.

Why bet on the Green Bay Packers?

While it was McCarthy who ultimately took the fall for the disappointing season in Green Bay, there is certainly an awful lot of blame to go around. While things have not been good for the Packers this season, they proved last weekend that there are still some signs of life and a bit of fight in this team, coming back from 15 points down to beat the Jets 44-38 in OT.   Lions at Packers should be an easy victory for Green Bay.   That was the first road win of the season for the Packers, which is one of the reasons why they are not going to be in the playoffs. Things have been much better at home, with Green Bay going 5-1-1 SU at Lambeau. While they have picked up wins at home, they have been inconsistent ATS, going 3-3 as a home favorite, as well as just 4-4 ATS as a favorite in all games.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction for Lions at Packers

While it will still be regarded as a bad season, winning 3 of their last 4 games would have the Packers fans perhaps feeling a little better about the future. The Packers can do that with a win here, which is what I think happens. I like them to cover and I also like the OVER.   Score: Detroit Lions 19 – Green Bay Packers 27
